"Don't Look Under the Bed" is a Disney Channel Original Movie from the era when every single DCOM was better than its predecessors. Surrounded by the Halloweentown franchise and everyone's continuous love of Hocus Pocus, "Don't Look Under the Bed" got swept aside shortly after it was released. It is, without a doubt, my favorite Halloween movie and it's a rare find every year when I attempt to watch it in October. Here are 5 reasons why "Don't Look Under the Bed" is an underrated gem and deserves to at least air once during Disney Channel's Halloween scheduling:
5. It made imaginary friends cool:
First of all, this particular imaginary friend's name is Larry Houdini. As if that didn't already make him awesome, he helps the protagonist, Frances, hunt down the boogeyman who's terrorizing her town and framing her for it. I had an imaginary friend when I was younger, but she lived at the lamp post by my house (ha!) and when this movie came out, I wished I had an imaginary friend like Larry.4. Frances' and Larry's relationship
I'm nothing if not a fangirl. Before I even knew what "shipping" was, I 100 percent wanted Frances and Larry together. Even as a kid, I thought they were adorable. Larry was Frances' little brother's imaginary friend, so their love of him brought the two of them together. Also, like most movies with high tension, things like chasing after a bogeyman tend to let sparks fly between the romantic leads. Even though it was a Disney movie, it did a good job of making their chemistry seem legitimate and not hokey.
3. The Boogeyman was actually scary
Remember, this was a Disney Channel movie. There were a few jump scares and when the audience finally got to see the Boogeyman, it was not a pretty sight. While he never scared me, rumor has it that the movie being too scary for kids is why it's never played anymore.
2. Frances' relationship with her little brother
The Boogeyworld's entrance is directly underneath the bed of Frances' little brother, Darwin. The Boogeyman grabs him by the leg as he's dangling his feet from his bed (another terrifying image for kids) and drags him into the Boogeyworld. Frances and Larry find out and they go on a mission to save him. Throughout the movie, Frances is Darwin's voice of reason when he's scared and she is very protective of him. It's sweet seeing a sibling relationship like theirs at the heart of the movie.
1. Real world issues
When Darwin was younger, he need a bone marrow transplant because he was sick. Frances wasn't able to help him, but luckily their older brother was able. She still feels guilty about it and she has to work through it while going into the Boogeyworld to save Darwin. I can name very few DCOMs that have a heavier story line, and this is one of them. It adds another layer to the movie.
If you happen to be able to find "Don't Look Under the Bed" somewhere online, I definitely recommend it!
