I Don't Criticize Your Major, So Don't Criticize Mine

All majors are important.

For a while, it seemed like there was a flood of articles criticizing people’s different college majors; claiming some were easier than others or don’t matter as much. But in all honesty, I don’t see why those articles were popular. Sure, they could have been well written, but why purposely go out of your way to criticize someone else’s passion?

My major, Communications, is a major that has been criticized time and time again. When I tell people about my major, most of them think all I’m learning is how to effectively communicate with people. But that’s only a small part of it. In reality, there is so much more to my major than what meets the eye.

Yes, currently I am learning about different communication theories and constructs that I will use throughout my career, but I’m also learning how to be a good public speaker, how to write as a journalist, and soon, how to interview people and create/edit videos.

I’m learning so much more than what meets the eye, and honestly, I love it. I love learning about my major and all that it entails. I love researching the different classes I’m going to take and the future careers I can have. It’s so cool because it personally interests me.

I get it, a lot of people will read that description and think it’s dumb or unappealing. I totally understand, my major isn’t for everyone, just like your major isn’t for everyone. What I don’t get is why people criticize other majors. Imagine someone coming up to you and saying that your major is “so easy” or you “won’t get anywhere with it”. Hurts, doesn’t it?

We all choose a major because it is something that we are interested in, or even passionate about. When people criticize it, it’s actually hurtful. Whether or not you think a major is “too easy” or “pointless”, keep your opinions to yourself. There’s no reason to go around saying those things. It is doing nothing but hurting people around you, and it’s just plain rude.

Everyone’s major is important, for more reasons than one. Support what other people are studying; you don’t have to like it or want to do it personally, but learn to support it. But most importantly, don’t criticize other people’s majors and they won’t criticize yours.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
