I don't know about you, but "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills" were very influential television shows in my life from ages ten to fourteen, and actually still at the ripe age twenty-one. To my adolescent self, there was no one cooler than the Queen B of California, Lauren Conrad. Now that I am older (probably not any wiser) and understand more, I now know that Lauren was just like any other teenager in love and dumb, but because of this we don't have to make those mistakes.
It was August 2006 when the season finale of season one of "The Hills" ended. The country was following the life of then super star Lauren 'LC' Conrad. On this season finale, she had to decide whether she wanted to spend the summer in Malibu with her high school boyfriend or go to Paris to further her career in fashion with Teen Vogue. At the end of the episode, you find out that Lauren chose to spend the summer in Malibu with her boyfriend Jason. This decision led to LC always being known as "The Girl Who Didn't Go to Paris."
In my life, I didn't want to be known as the 'girl who didn't go to Madrid.' This summer I was offered the opportunity to do an internship in Madrid or stay home with my friends, family, and boyfriend. Unlike Lauren Conrad, I chose to go to my destination. We later found out that after 'LC' said no to Paris, she broke up with her boyfriend that same summer and regretted not going to Paris. That was my biggest fear, regret. I didn't want to look back at my former self and wish I didn't stay for a man or my friends or my family. I wanted to say I lived my life to the fullest and that I took risks. So that's what I am doing with the support of everyone, including my man.
So thank you, Lauren Conrad, for making your mistakes on national television so all of your admiring teenage fans would end up being risk-taking, bomb adults. Without your mistakes, we would take the easy way out. We wouldn't be free-spirited travelers, or follow our dreams. To all you girls out there settling in your life for a man, remember some of them are replaceable, but adventures and memories aren't.
