It took me so long to get into the marvelous world of Doctor Who. Back in the fall of my 16th year, none of my friends or family watched the show. The only exposure I had of it was from the wonderful land of Tumblr.
Even though I was intrigued by the whole time traveling premise, I never actually planned on watching the show since I was already so busy with school work and you know, life.
I had this awful day at school during March, you know, the usual teenage problems, like homework, awkward crushes, and a mixture of too many hormones. I was a mess every time I arrived home from school. The only thing that I could do was to wrap myself in tons of blankets and turn on the TV.
As I was flipping channels, this Doctor Who show that Tumblr raved so much about was playing on the Latin American BBC. I decided to give it a try and see if it was a decent story for me to watch.
By the way, Doctor Who is a British TV show that has been running for more than 50 years. It has become incredibly popular after the new series came out in 2005. The show follows an alien figure known as "The Doctor," a time lord from the planet Gallifrey, who travels around space and time in his time machine called the TARDIS (short for Time and Relative Dimension in Space) along with several companions.
The episode playing was "Vincent and The Doctor." In it, the Doctor travels back in time and meets Vincent Van Gogh. The Doctor forms a powerful connection with the painter and saves him from an alien monster as well.
I immediately fell in love with the show with that one episode. It was fantastic! My mind was blown in so many ways. I have never seen a show so whimsical, and heartwarming as Doctor Who. Words will never describe my feelings after seeing that story, particularly this scene:
It also gave me a quote that changed my life forever:
I began to marathon the whole new series after it. I watched episode after episode after episode. Doctor Who became my escape. My problems didn’t exist anymore every time that I watched it. Doctor Who became my world. It has given me hope and something that is uncommon in developing countries like Honduras: the ability to dream.
Although I'm currently really behind on the newest episodes because of college, I can testify that this show will live with me forever. Doctor Who gave me so much besides many hours of escape, and way too many quotes. This show made me realize so many things about life in general. I have realized that like the Doctor, we go through so many adventures and meet so many people who impact us and become our "companions". Life will throw so many adversities in our way. However, it is in the moments that we may be feeling powerless, that we need those companions to survive and go on. Doctor Who taught me that despite, what may be going on, I will always manage to survive.
Doctor Who has made me see life as an adventure and has empowered me everywhere that I go. It made me realize that we human beings are capable of accomplishing great feats. We have the ability to overcome the impossible. But most importantly, it has made me appreciate and realize the impact every person I have met has had in my life.
So thank you, Doctor Who. You have helped me through some rough times. But there’s still an awful running to do!
There's no better way to conclude this article with some wise words from the Doctor himself: "We are all stories in the end, just make it a good one, eh?"
