At midnight DNCE, premiered the video for their new single "Toothbrush". Not only is it extremely catchy, but it also shares a great message. It starts with dreamy lead singer, Joe Jonas, laying in a hotel bed looking out the window. After watching this scene, everyone has in their mind that they will see a thin model-esque woman lay down with him because that has been done so many times before. However, the camera switches and we see none other than plus-sized
In case you have been living under a rock, Ashley Graham has been kicking a** in the entertainment industry. She is considered to be the first "plus-sized" (normal) model to be on Sports Illustrated and models for Lane Bryant.
Throughout the video they highlight just how attractive curvy women are. The camera pans upwards most of the time, and doesn't hide her body unlike other pop videos.
The most important statement that this music video makes is to young girls. This tells them that they are beautiful. No matter what size, you too can be in a music video just like this one.
There are thousands of feedback tweets exclaiming that it's great to see a curvy woman in a pop music video. However, we have to remember that this isn't groundbreaking because she weighs more than other models, but that we are finally normalizing women of her size.
Kudos to DNCE for showing young girls that you can be breathtaking at any size, and also do cute things with Joe Jonas around a hotel room. I hope to see more body image conscious music videos in the future.
