This past weekend, Harvard proved to be number one in our hearts and on the field, but there is one extremely important category in which Harvard unfortunately does not top any rankings: Food!
At the Harvard-Yale game, I was reminded why I loved my college, but that morning at a Yale dining hall there were moments where I had to concede defeat.
The variety of food made me jealous, but I promise this article is not just a privileged little student whining about the lack of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes at Annenberg, although we should seriously get Frosted Flakes. Look, even Ryan Gosling supports me.
But seriously, the food available to college students in their dining halls is extremely important. Healthy options are vital for creating healthy habits that we will keep throughout our lives, and our body needs good fuel to keep us going through essays and tests.
Most importantly, I believe food is a major component of any real happiness. A good chicken pesto sandwich lunch can turn a bad day around, so let's acknowledge the almighty power of food and give it more attention at our college campus!
The first step is sustainability, which HUDS has made some great advances in, such as their commitment to locally grown foods and environmentally conscientious facilities. What we're really missing is variety, so here are three humble suggestions.
1. Let's spice up the salad bar! Some almonds, pecans, or goat cheese? Maybe even avocado slices on holy days? HUDS has served all these items before, so it really is just about making them more accessible to promote healthy and creative eating. Adam Levine is here to back me up when I see we need to liven up the lettuce.
2. Funkier Fruits!
I understand apples, oranges, and bananas are easy and delicious, but they are boring! Once in awhile some antioxidant-rich blueberries or some actually fresh strawberries would be amazing. I'd buy them for myself at the farmer's market but I am seriously broke. Come on endowment, help us out. It's simple changes really. If Yale can have grapes, why can't we?
3. Nutella once a week!
I realize this might ruin my healthy foods argument, but seriously, a big spoonful of Nutella is all I need sometimes. I mean, look at that happiness.
