I tend to watch a lot of foreign films instead of American ones. They appeal to me more and subtitles never bother me. I've watched Korean, Chinese, Japanese, French, and British films as far as I remember maybe a Spanish one here and there. I tend to watch more Asian films more than the others but I really do love them all. If you also like foreign films, here are some difference that I have seen among them.
1. Korean Films: These ones tend to be a bit more on the romance side. It features a main character with a lot of friends. It's also has more modern settings within the country. I've only seen South Korean films and this is what I've noticed. A lot of bright colors, light humor, and always male and female actors that you can't resist crushing on.
2. Chinese Films: These films tend to have a solid mix of romance and martial arts. There is always a magic or spiritual type being that needs to be fought and then a small group of strangers travel to fight or help that magic. The beasts usually have tragic back stories of losing their loved ones which made them turn evil or made them need help. Some of my favorite actors come from the older Chinese films that have traditional settings.
3. Japanese Films: Much like Chinese films, these ones have romance and martial arts, very little romance though. The Japanese tend to focus more on honor rather than romance. The martial arts and strategy that comes into play is based on their forever ideals of honor. Usually empires are fighting a war and a loved one is in trouble, honor is usually broken. It depends on the director whether they kill the traitor or make them do something amazing to regain it.
4. French and British Films: I tend to find large similarities between French and British films. They both tend to have a lot of uncut nudity and sex scenes, things that I don't really enjoy. British films are more on the quirky style, they are strange but they lead to concepts on society that we don't usually realize. Both styles of film have a lot of talking and close ups of faces, it's more dry humor as well.
6. American Films: We as a society are always looking for something new and more exciting. We have movies that always need to feature new concepts but somehow all of our films fall under a certain stigma for a little while. For example, we have The Hunger Games series, The Divergent series, and The Maze Runner series. All of these times of films have ideas of a dystopian society and the featured characters will be the ones to save it.
Of course, none of these films fall under one genre or one time period. This list is just based on what I have seen and what I enjoy.
