How Not To Die During Finals Week

The library is packed, you're on your 7th cup of coffee for the day, and you're dying inside because exams are the worst.

Finals week is notoriously the worst week for a college student. Stress levels are high, sleep levels are low, and the library is packed 24/7. Here are a few tips to survive the worst week of the semester.

1. Get off your phone.

Are you really memorizing those equations if you keep replying to a snapchat from your BFF? No. Let's be honest, it's a distraction and you can learn so much more without seeing a Facebook notification every 5 seconds.

2. Throw away the energy drinks.

Okay, maybe drink one. But not at 3 a.m. the day before the exam. Caffeine rushes never end well. In fact, energy drinks don't truly give you any new energy- they just push out all the stored energy you already have, so as soon as it wears off you'll probably feel too tired to function. Instead, focus on drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated.

Also, don't pull an all nighter. I repeat: DO NOT PULL AN ALL NIGHTER. "Sleep is for the weak" is ridiculous. Sleep is very very important to your overall health. USA Today claims that even just getting 4 hours of sleep can improve your score on a test than if you had stayed up studying.

3. Make time for you.

You don't need to spend every waking minute of the every day in the textbook. Make time for an activity that is fun and relaxing. Go for a walk or a run, play a video game, or invite your friends over. Take a nap. Binge watch (but only like 3 episodes because you still should study) your favorite show on Netflix. Find something to get your mind off of the impending doom that is exams.

4. Do study, but selectively.

Don't try to re-learn (or learn for the first time if you're really doing it wrong lolol) the whole course in a day. You won't do it. Instead, look up old exams and practice questions. Strategically go over the more important topics and chapters in the book. It's better to know a few topics very well than only like one thing about each chapter.

5. Don't give up.

I know you are under a ton of stress and you may even be questioning why you're at college. Guess what? You made it to finals week, now you've just got to get through it. You're smarter than you know. You've got this!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
