Democrats Have Found A True Victory Of Diversity In The 2018 Midterms

We've had a few weeks of time to really process the midterm election results. Now has come the moment to open up deeper conversations around the results and their implications. The notable point of interest that has been widely discussed across news platforms is that Democrats have gained the House majority. Yet while Democrats certainly deserve recognition for accomplishing this feat, it is nonetheless important to remember that the blue wave wasn't the tsunami many hoped for but they still flipped 40 seats in the House.

The real victory for the Democrats does not lie in numbers. The Democrats' true accomplishment is the amount of diversity they have managed to bring to the political landscape in this country. Of the three new Democratic senators elected, all were women. To the House, Democrats brought an Asian American man from New Jersey, a Latina woman from the Bronx, a Muslim American from Minnesota, and many more. This is especially laudable in contrast with the Republican party, the party that managed to elect thirty-eight new members to the House, only two of which were women.

The changing face of Congress is revolutionary. It is important because it suggests that certain federal policies now have the chance to become more efficient and effective in a way never before deemed possible. For far too long now, conservative old white men have been usurping the most powerful seats in the country. They have been sitting on their unfitting thrones, looking down upon the rest of us, acting as if they are capable of making decisions on behalf of masses of people they know nothing about.

But times, they are changing. Today in America, immigration reform policies can be proposed and perfected by some of the very people who have had first-hand experience with immigration. Laws that affect African American's prospects of voting or attaining home mortgages in certain geographic regions can be drafted by representatives that share the skin color of their constituents. And of course, significantly, legislation that pertains to abortion rights and health care coverage of birth control medication can be discussed by those who actually possess a vagina.

So all of you old-timers take note: There is a younger, more female, more colorful Congress leading our country. We invite you to join us in fulfilling our initiative to make this nation a more welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all, not just for a select few. We will fight for the women and the children, for the poor and the rich, for the big and small businesses, and for people of every race, every religion. We will fight for you too, old timers, because we recognize that you, too, are valuable citizens of the United States. But just understand that if you don't want to join us, then you should step out of our way. We will not let you litter obstacles on our path towards justice. Should you try, we assure you we will defeat you in the next round of voting.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
