"So, can you like, read my mind?"
Unfortunately, no. I am not a psychic, and therefore I can't read your mind. The biggest misconception with being a psychology major is that we love to listen and that we all want to be therapists/psychologists/psychiatrists. Don't get me wrong, we are great listeners. But sometimes we choose not to be.
A degree is this major is not limited to clinical/research, though. There are several fields that psychology majors can go in to. The beauty of it is that even if you don't like the career path you've chosen, you already have the basic classes down, and you can easily change your path.
For me, I knew I wanted to be a psych major when I took the first basic psych class. It also helped that I really liked my professor. In the beginning, I wanted to be a family and drug counselor. But I have since come to figure out that I actually hate the idea of doing that for the rest of my life. Not many have heard of this field, but I have since changed my career path to becoming an IO psychologist. Industrial and organizational psychology is the scientific study of human behavior in organizations and the workplace.
So pretty much, I will address issues of recruitment, selection and placement, training and development, performance measurement, workplace motivation and reward systems, quality of work life, the structure of work and human factors, organizational development and consumer behavior. I know, a lot, but I am so excited by the thought of it.
The reactions that I get from people when I tell them that I am a psych major is actually humorous to me. "And what are you going to do with that degree?" Well, first of all, a degree in psychology can be used for many jobs. Some of the fields are abnormal, social, personality, biological, cross-cultural, industrial/organizational, developmental, health, sports, forensic, and the list goes on. There are so many possibilities.
There have been several times that I have debated on changing my major, but I always come back to loving the idea of a career in psychology. I have so many goals that I want to achieve in this field. It can become a struggle with all of the electives we have to take, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
