What It's Like Being Indecisive

A rather silly story about my indecisiveness

What It's Like Being Indecisive
Casey Koenig

I am not very decisive.

When I go to restaurants, I never know what I want to eat. Even if I narrow it down to pasta, I can’t decide between five different types of it. Do I want penne with vodka or fettuccini alfredo? Maybe I want linguini. Crap, here comes the server. I’ll just say the first one that catches my eye when I look down at the menu. Baked ziti it is. Wait, where did that even come from?

My indecisiveness annoys my family and friends sometimes. Knowing what I’m like when I go out to eat, my friend Frank slapped a menu in my hand the moment we sat down at a New York City restaurant one day and said, “you are picking something right now, Casey!” I gave a sheepish grin to his three other friends that we were with and told them, “I’m very indecisive.”

Last week, my friend Julia and I bailed on a shore day because of the crummy weather and went to Color Me Mine in Ridgewood, NJ instead. You pick from different plates and ceramics to paint, then they cook it and you pick it up a few weeks later and it looks shiny and beautiful.

After looking at the different options, I decided to paint a koala piggy bank. Julia picked out a mug. We sat down and one of the women who worked there gave us the instructions. I was in the midst of writing down the colors I wanted to use when I looked up at a shelf I forgot to look at and saw an OLAF ceramic.

I gasped excitedly like I always do when I see Olaf because I love him so much. I got up, took him off the shelf, and put him next to my koala.

“They have Olaf!” I squealed happily.

“I can see that,” Julia said, unamused.

“But… which one do I paint now?”

“You have to paint Olaf,” Julia said.

She had a point. Olaf is the best. But… the koala I intended on painting was so damn cute. I felt conflicted. I needed more opinions.

I texted my mom a picture of the two of them. “Who do I paint?” My mom was no help. She said they were both cute. I already knew that they were both cute, that was the whole problem.

I texted my friend Pat. A whole minute passed and he didn’t answer. He was taking way too long.

I texted a group chat that had my friends Danielle, Emily, and Alexis in it. Danielle said Olaf. Emily said koala. I snap chatted my streaks. Most of them said Olaf. My friend Jen said, “Paint the elephant. You already have so much Olaf.”

“It is a KOALA,” I responded.

“I don’t know what to do,” I whined to Julia.

Julia was starting to get very annoyed with my childish behavior. “Casey, you are 19 years old and you can’t decide between an Olaf and a koala ceramic! Just pick one already!”

I picked Olaf. Obviously. When have I ever chosen anything over Olaf? I still wished I could have painted the koala too, though. If I ever go back, I’m definitely painting the koala.

A bunch of small children came in with their moms, and they did not have nearly as big of a problem picking out their ceramic. This may have been partially because their moms forced them to make a decision relatively quickly, but still…

Here’s a picture of the Olaf I painted. He looks better from a distance. I can’t wait to see the final result after he’s finished cooking. He’ll look great sitting on my dresser.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
