When all of your friends have their exact major and basically the rest of their life planned out, being an undecided major can be pretty scary. Don’t let it stress you out too much.
Being undecided is not the end of the world, I actually think it is the most comfortable place to be starting college. Being undecided allows you the chance to take classes and explore different fields; opportunities that your ‘decided’ friends might not get. Being undecided allows you more time to actually figure out what you want to do with your life. Being undecided means you can take classes that actually interest you because, let’s be serious, no one finds accounting interesting. Being undecided is the best decision you could make.
The second half of my senior year of highschool I decided I wanted to go into the legal field, eventually becoming a lawyer. The University of Scranton does not offer a ‘pre-law’ major, so what was I supposed to do? The University does, however, have a pre-law advisory program, which helps direct students towards law school. It was here that I found out you can major in literally anything and still go to law school, which I didn’t think would make choosing a major any easier. My mom advised me to choose something I’m interested in and something that would actually be valuable in the future.
After this I tossed around a few ideas:
- Psychology: turns out I hate psychology.
- English: Useful, but nothing special
- Business: I’m really bad at math. Really. Bad.
None of these options seemed the slightest bit interesting.
Throughout my first semester, I realized being undecided isn’t the worst thing in the world, it’s actually pretty beneficial. It allows you the opportunity to explore different fields to find what you enjoy and excel at the most. While registering for next semester and doing my research and different classes and what they focus on, I became enamored with the Criminal Justice Major. Criminal Justice is a major I never even really considered for myself, because I was unaware of what one actually does with a Criminal Justice Major. The classes sound fascinating, and include many classes focused around the legal system. Hopefully my choices next semester will help guide me to my future major.
To all you undecided majors out there: it’s not the end of the world. Explore the options given to you, and keep exploring them until you find something you love. Choose something that won’t make work feel like work.
