When I first arrived at college as a freshman, I had no clue as to what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. That is a big decision at 18 years old with not enough guidelines for me to follow. As a result, I chose a major that I was not excited for what so ever.
The first semester was so difficult because my classmates were always talking about what they would do with their degree or how they could make a difference. Going along to keep up with the conversation, I tried to convince myself that I was just as passionate as they were. I knew deep down that I miserable.
By the second semester, I could not take it any longer. The introduction class did not convince me and my heart was not in it all the way. After speaking with my parents and researching other options, I found out what I was most passionate about.
During my second semester of college, I changed my major to Mass Communications with a focus in Journalism. For me, this was a big step and definitely a challenge. I have had conflicts in previous years of expressing myself and communicating with other people. Now, I was trying to enter a field that revolves around communication.
From freshman year to present time, which is my junior year, I have learned so much about the field and about myself. I have grown to have a voice of my own through my writing and spoken words. I learned to not be afraid to use my voice as a platform for those who can't speak u for themselves.
Entering college is scary enough as it is. The pressure of finding the major that best suits you and having the passion for it is truly a challenge. Taking the time out to research and allowing it to work itself out is rewarding and a major stress relief.
Accept the challenge, work hard and you will find the path you are meant to take.
