One morning this past spring break, I rolled over after waking up to check my phone as usual. Scrolling through news stories, I stumbled across a headline that jarred me; "Top Gear Host Jeremy Clarkson Sacked By BBC." Clarkson is alleged to have verbally and physically assaulted a Top Gear producer at a hotel over the lack of food. To those who are unfamiliar with the British motoring show, Top Gear, simply put -- it is the most popular car show on TV. With three cranky, middle-aged hosts -- Jeremy, James and Richard -- this hit program has a worldwide audience exceeding 350 million. The show owes its success of over 20 seasons to the trio's perfect blend of hilarity and calamity, as well as a wealth of car related knowledge. With Clarkson's firing, a part of me, along with Top Gear as we know it, have died.
Upon reading the allegations, I immediately knew them to be true. Clarkson has a history of being a more than edgy, hot headed journalist. This latest and final straw is one that comes from some of the most unnecessary and impulsive actions ever to be reported upon. Clarkson's decision to lash out over something as simple as food leaves me in a place beyond disappointment. Because of Clarkson's irrational and mindless actions one of the world's favorite TV programs is destined to meet its end. Without Jeremy, the impeccable chemistry between he, James and Richard is broken beyond any form of repair. This flawless combination of hosting brought Top Gear, a show that was on the verge of being axed (before the three came aboard) to one of BBC's most acclaimed shows. The world's best auto makers send the show their newest cars in order to have them tested, crashed, blown up, sunk in rivers, and much more.
The breaking of this sorrowful news, in relation to Jeremy Clarkson's actions and his resulting dismissal from BBC, serves to be one of the lowest points of my spring break, by far. Without Clarkson, and with James and Richard's contracts expiring soon, the TV nirvana which is Top Gear is all but over. If there is any solace to be found, it is that almost every Top Gear season can be found on iTunes, allowing us to relive and relish what is without a doubt of the best shows of our era, long after it takes it's final lap.
