To My Dear Peer Mentor Team

For those who made an impact, one student at a time.

To My Dear Peer Mentor Team
TLU

I just want to take time out to thank each and every 2015-2016 Texas Lutheran University Peer Mentor team member. You guys really made a huge impact, whether you know it or not. I know only five of us will be returning for the upcoming academic year, but I just want to let everyone know that you are appreciated. Out of all the teams I’ve had to be on in my life, this is the one I will absolutely remember. You all showed tremendous respect to one another. It is rare that a team of people with different backgrounds can come together as one. You all proved that diversity is possible and a team is still possible in today’s society.

Since the first day we all met, I could tell this was going to be a good academic year. All 19 of us got along! I repeat, all 19! We broke those stereotypical barriers of a team that can’t get along and brings drama to the group. Do you guys not understand how important that is? We each were able to get to know one another, even the people you didn’t even know by name at first. We shared many laughs throughout training week. Now, you all know how stressful training week got with all of the sessions we had to attend, but we made it through that without hurting anyone. There were rarely any arguments or disagreements. When one person talked, you all listened and waited for them to finish what they were saying before you talked.

If you ever feel like you didn’t do a good enough job, I’m here to tell you that you indeed did a great job. Better than good--you were fantastic. You may not know it but your students thank you (although some may not show it). You made a difference in the lives of the students here. If you don’t believe me, just take a moment before the year ends to look at some of your students. Look at where they’ve come from. A lot of them have come a long way since the first day of school. Some are very involved with the campus and have sprouted into something great. And guess what? You helped them sprout into something great.

I, personally, am blessed that I was able to work with each and every one of you. You all believed in me as well and put up with my shenanigans. If there is anyone that ever tells you that a Peer Mentor is unnecessary, or don’t understand the role we play, all you have to do is show them your students. Point out all of the good your students have done and how they got there. You don’t even have to try to explain your job to them. Let them see your work. You know they say talk is cheap, it’s when you actually do the work that matters.

I want each and every one of you to know that whatever you do in life, remember the impact you can have on someone. I love all of you, and for those that will not be returning to the team, have a wonderful summer break and don’t forget about this team. For the four that will be joining me for the 2016-2017 Peer Mentor team, let’s make this team just as strong as the previous.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
