Dear Haruhi,
First off, I fucking love you. You’re hella badass. You admire the offbeat things in the world. You strive to be different and your desire to save humanity from having a boring life is incredibly admirable. Although you’re fictional, you’re one of my biggest inspirations. Without you, I would not have gotten into college. No lie—I wrote my college essay about you. The prompt I chose was to write about a fictional character that inspires you and why. It was the best damn paper I had written in my life (at that point, as an English major I’ve come a long way naturally).
What drew me to you was your eccentric and passionate attitude. Some may see you as pushy (and at times your actions are questionable) but you can’t help but respect your passion. You wanted to befriend a time traveler, an ESPer and an alien and you freakin' did it. You wanted to start an awesome and unique club and you did it. You wanted to be different and you definitely are. And that’s what I love about you.
When you went to that baseball game and saw that you were just one of many people in this massive universe, your struggle to accept that you were just another ordinary person punched me right in the heart. After this you made it your mission to be as different possible. I mean, what little ass girl is ballsy enough to break into a high school baseball field to draw odd symbols in the hopes of being contacted by aliens? And being smart enough to coerce a high school dude into helping you? That’s impressive! Even more impressive is that your unwavering passion in your beliefs. You’re aware that others peg you an outcast because you’re “weird” but that doesn’t bother you. Growing up, I was often the odd kid out, so I know how that feels. It sucks, but you solider on. You’re super punk rock in the way that you don’t get bothered by others opinions.
But going beyond all that, you know the popular Gandhi quote? The overly cited but really awesome one about being the change you wished to see in the world? Well you did that. You didn't want to get caught in the cycle of living an ordinary life, you went above and beyond, and I do mean beyond to seek out the extraordinary. And you found it even though you’re unaware of it. You still appreciate your non boring life and you’re closest with the only ordinary person in your clique.
I wanna thank you for always being you and refusing to let your dreams be dreams. It’s such a tragedy you’re not real, but rest assured, your dreams are very real and alive in me and I hope to make you proud!
