Dear FGCU, Here's What I've Missed About You While I've Been Away
Gracie Dougherty

As the fall semester gets closer and closer, I can't help but get excited to return to the best college around.

After spring semester ended, I came back home to Wisconsin and I've been anxiously awaiting my return to Fort Myers, Florida. Don't get me wrong, I love being home, but I certainly miss making my way through Florida Gulf Coast University's beautiful campus. It's been a few months, FGCU, and I've been missing you.

I've missed your amazing campus.

There's nothing quite like walking through pathways lined with palm trees with ponds and lakes around every corner. FGCU's campus is beyond gorgeous, from the boardwalks to the campus beach, beauty is found within every step of the campus. I've certainly missed strolling through the grounds of FGCU every day.

I've missed your awesome staff and professors.

There are some absolutely amazing people who work at FGCU. From desk assistants to professors, from cleaning staff to campus police officers, they are all so friendly and welcoming. Each person who works at FGCU seems genuinely happy to be there and they are just as happy that you're there, too. I can't wait to see some friendly faces again and to meet new staff come fall semester.

I've missed your students.

One of the best parts of roaming around campus, going to class, or getting food is seeing all the students. I've met some pretty great people during my first year at FGCU and I can't wait to see them again. I'm also looking forward to all the new, wonderful students I'll meet during my next three years!

I've missed your RSOs.

The opportunities to get involved and be a part of something at FGCU are endless. There are countless Registered Student Organizations (also known as RSOs or clubs) available for all students. I'm lucky to be a part of a few at FGCU and I can't wait to see all the great opportunities fall semester will bring to RSOs.

I've missed your activities and constant fun.

There is rarely a time when the Library Lawn isn't full of students tabling, music playing, food trucks, hammocks, etc. There is even the occasional giant blow-up alligator slide. Every corner of campus has something going on and there certainly isn't a dull moment around campus. FGCU makes sure that their students are able to experience everything and anything - it's awesome.

I've missed your Starbucks.

This is a big thing I've missed, especially considering that Starbucks will be unveiling a new remodel for the fall semester... I can't wait. Located within the library, I find myself at Starbucks multiple times during each week - maybe too many times than I'd like to admit. It's a fabulous place to get an ice-cold coffee, a bite to eat, or even just to have somewhere to sit and study. Starbucks, I'm coming for you in just a few short weeks, so be prepared to see me very often.

FGCU, I've missed you.

Thank you for being a place that I can miss so much. Thank you for being such a welcoming and friendly environment. I'm lucky to be able to have found a home with you, and I can't wait to see you again soon. Go Eagles and wings up!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
