Although your Valentine's Day plans may have consisted of dinner and a movie, chances are you saw something romantic to celebrate Hallmark's Day of Love. Maybe you went to see "The Choice." Or, for those lovers of the classics (with a hint of horror), "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." Maybe you stayed home to watch "The Notebook" or "Love Actually."
But if you're a self-proclaimed nerd, you rejoiced in the fact that "Deadpool" was finally, after seven years, being released.
After an extremely disappointing appearance in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," some fans worried that "Deadpool" wouldn't live up to the hype.
Fear not, worried fans. This Deadpool lacks the laser eyes and knife hands. To make the movie even better, Deadpool's mouth is never sewn shut, granting viewers the joy of Ryan Reynolds' many inappropriate jokes and general hilarity.
"Deadpool," which serves as an origin tale for the antihero by the same name, exceeded many fans' expectations when it comes to sexual humor, graphic violence and fourth wall breaks.
Although the flashbacks were fully formed and made a great story, the present-day moments were slightly lacking. It felt that the lack of story was covered up by Deadpool's incessant joke-telling and love for violence. It definitely worked for the character, but left fans wanting a little more sustenance.
Comic book purists were left even more disappointed when the "Deadpool" movie didn't exactly follow the comic books. Maybe it will get back on track with upcoming films, but I would suspect not, considering how other Marvel films have veered off course.
Despite the movie's couple flaws, "Deadpool" was widely successful among fans. Not only was it absolutely hilarious, it stuck to the character and his powers much better than previous attempts ("X-Men Origins," I'm looking at you).
Although most Marvel movies fall into the PG-13 category, "Deadpool" fits snugly in R. The short blip of controversy regarding the movie's rating may have been justified, but completely unnecessary. If the movie had been PG-13 instead of R, it just wouldn't have been "Deadpool."
So, if you're a Marvel fan with a soft spot for the foul-mouthed mercenary, make sure to leave the kiddies at home, buy yourself a chimichanga and go see "Deadpool."
