'Deadpool 2': Bigger, But Not Better

When the first Deadpool movie came out, the idea of a superhero (Iron Man, Captain America, etc.) completely changed. It was vulgar, comedic, and more adult-oriented, which was perfect for my generation of peers. It involved the story of a “homegrown” superhero who is placed in an R-rated film. He talks to the audience and breaks the 4th wall by referring to Professor X as Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy (the actors that played that character depending on the X-men movies). The only downfall was that it was not involved in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, so you couldn’t see the interactions between Deadpool and Iron Man or Hulk.

Deadpool 2 was released May 10, 2018 and it received a large blockbuster intake but it was not as good as the first one. With Deadpool, you can never be disappointed with the references and jokes. Ryan Reynolds is the perfect Deadpool and he is a gift to mankind. It feels like his acting as Deadpool is no different than how he is in real life which is a perfect experience for anybody watching the movie. Sometimes, especially in this movie, it goes a little over the top and feels a little cringy. I understand that Deadpool is supposed to be a little over the top but Deadpool is acting too much like Deadpool instead of like Ryan Reynolds. Like, it feels as if Deadpool is acting as Deadpool too much and overacting if that makes sense.

The plot of the movie is also not what I expected, and it didn’t turn into a nice surprise. The trailer does not give a good idea of what the movie is like and although it was an interesting twist, it felt a little dumb. All the actors in the movie were really good and I wish I could have seen more of all of them instead of it just being only about Deadpool again. Because of this, all the other main characters were thrown to the side and given just the bare minimum to exist. I know it’s called Deadpool 2 but if you are going to introduce all those characters, put them on screen more so that it doesn’t just seem like filler.

The highlight of the film was the after credits. I can’t say it because it would be a spoiler but if you can wait to see the movie at home, then you should just watch the after credit scenes because it is hilarious for anybody who has seen older Marvel movies. The jokes, like I said, are also on point. There are references to different movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Basic Instinct. I did like how they took it down a different route where instead of love, like in the first movie, it’s about family.

It does well what I expect a Deadpool movie to do but compared to other movies, even other superhero movies, it falls a little flat. If you’re looking for a good summer flick, you can hit this one up but don’t expect it to be as good as the first.

2.5/5 for the good jokes but the lackluster plot and side characters.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
