Everyone knows the comic book movie giant is Marvel. Everything they put out is fantastic and a nearly guaranteed commercial success. They've managed to turn minuscule (and boring) no-name heroes into big name heroes. I mean I had no idea who Ant-Man was until they made a movie about him. I had no intention of watching the movie either, but I did and it was surprisingly good and basically funny.
Rarely does a media company achieve such rampant and guaranteed success with nearly every movie, and it's not like the company needs the financial success. Marvel is owned by Disney, arguably the most successful modern media company.
Seeing the huge success that Marvel has achieved through making movies inspired by comic books, long time rival DC, decided to start its own line of superhero movies. So DC launched its new era of movies such as: "Suicide Squad", "Batman v. Superman", and the upcoming "Justice League". Everyone seems excited about them but also slightly anxious over if DC will deliver, something Marvel fans do not usually worry about.
Despite being commercial successes, "Batman v. Superman" and "Suicide Squad" have been bashed on by critics. To be honest, though these movies are fun to watch, their commercial success can be attributed to two major factors: diversity and amazing characters. To be honest, the writing is lackluster and the predictable, recycled plot had already been seen in dozens of previous action movies. If you had changed the characters it would be a remake.
Mostly, these new DC movies have only been successful because fans want to see their comic book characters come to life. DC has way better characters than Marvel does, so that has been their leg up.
But the want for seeing their favorite characters on screen can only drive commercial success for a fleeting amount of time. DC: you need to have an intellectual, creative story line. A movie is nothing without a great story. You can coast by using other film accessories (like diversity, amazing visuals, and brilliant acting) for a summer blockbuster that you can potentially make money on but won't be a success that lasts. What corporate media wants is rarely what the fans want, and we are the ones that determine whether your movies are successful or not.
And that's what Marvel has. Its stories are amazing; filled with creativity, humor, Stan Lee, depth, and a philosophical meaning. A good movie tells a compelling story.
But one thing DC is doing better than Marvel at is diversity. DC wasted no time in putting in production for a Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman movie, both featuring female protagonists. Suicide Squad was extremely ethnically diverse, which contributed massively to its financial success.
I, along with thousands of DC fans, are rooting for DC's success. But its so hard when your movies have no compelling reason to watch other than to see our favorite characters. Add depth to your writing.
