What It's Really Like Dating A Marine

Some of you might ask, "How is dating a Marine any different than dating someone in the Army or Navy?". It isn't much different, depending on how you look at it. Marines are a different breed. They were born to be Marines. They love their country and will do anything in their power to help people and our country.

1. You have to understand what all they have been through

The Marines are the toughest Military branch of the United States and most people just push it aside like it's not a big deal. You have to understand the amount of stress and torture that they go through just to save your country. They became a Marine to help save your country and to keep you safe. They go through bootcamp; not being able to sleep, not being able to eat. They have to outlast moral, mental, and physical battles that are given to them. They dig even deeper when there's nothing left to give. They aren't scared of anything anymore, because they are punished by facing their fears until they aren't scared anymore. They are our heroes, and we need to respect what they do for us.

2. The Marines is all they know anymore

When you ask them what they are doing or what they plan on doing, it always involves the Marines. Whether they are at home or on base, they are doing something involved with their job. When you catch them walking or making the bed, they are doing exactly what they were taught. They have good and bad habits that the Marines have taught them, whether they like it or not, they don't have control over it. When they come home, they don't know what to do because they are constantly busy when they are away. You just have to be there for them, even when it gets tough.

3. Brotherhood

They become so close that it's kind of weird, but you have to understand that they have all been through the same thing and understand where each other is coming from. They are always there for each other and their families. They are best friends; they are brothers.

4. When you're dating one Marine, you are dating all of them

Let's face it... if you're dating a Marine, you're dating all of his friends. They are always together, so it's pretty difficult to talk one on one. You get to meet them and talk to them while FaceTiming. You get to pick on him with his friends and you get to know what they really think about him. You get to see them goof around when they aren't working and it might be the best thing that you have ever seen. You know that they are always under stress while working, so when you get to see them having fun, it makes you happy to see them like that.

5. Constant worrying

Dating a Marine is definitely not easy. They are constantly doing their job, and they are never home. You are always worrying about what they are doing or if they are in constant danger. You worry that the next time you talk to him, might be the last time and that he may never come home. You worry that you may never see him again, or something could happen that could change his life forever.

6. Constant traveling

They are almost never home, and you have to write letters or talk to them over the phone. When they are in different countries, it is difficult to talk because of the different time zones. You have to talk to them on the phone at odd hours, depending on both of your schedules. They are constantly busy doing something so its difficult to find a time to talk. Sometimes you only get to talk for five minutes out of the day, or none at all but you have to work through it and never give up. My Marine is going to Japan for 2 years and it will most likely be the most difficult thing that I will have to deal with. Not being able to see him for so long, barely being able to talk, worrying about if he is ok. I'm scared, but I will be right by his side throughout it all.

7. They might seem like big boulders with no emotion, but they are big softies on the inside

Yes, they are well built and show no emotion while at work or even out walking down the sidewalk but they are actually big softies on the inside. They care about everything even if they don't show it. They care about their brothers in the Marine Core, they care about their families and friends back home. They care whether or not they are going to make it back home safe. They care whether or not they are doing their part of the job. All they want is to come home and to see their families but they have a job and they will fulfill that job as best as they can. They are committed to every battle and will never give up.

8. He will always show his unconditional love, no matter how far he is

My Marine always knows how to cheer me up when I'm having a bad day or if I'm just upset because I don't get to see him. He is thousands of miles away, but that doesn't stop him from showing me his love. He will call or FaceTime me anytime he gets the chance. He sends me little gifts in the mail, without me asking. He sends me hand written letters, because he knows those are my favorite. He sends me good morning and goodnight texts, every day. He always finds a time to come home to see me, whether it's a month later or a year later. As long as I get to see him, it's worth the time apart. It's not easy but I will always be here, right by his side throughout it all, supporting him in anyway I can.

This one is for my Marine, I love you. For all Marines, thank you for what you do and for serving our country.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
