The bard might be dead, but he loves to bring couples together! Every summer, Louisville hosts “Shakespeare in the Park” the best date night activity for miles around. Enjoy your summer evening with your significant other at Central Park in Old Louisville. Enjoy the open air stage, and the laid back feel of watching a play on a park bench. It’s free to get in and a picnic basket is encouraged but there are plenty of food trucks around to order from just in case you forgot to pack a sandwich. Best of all there is a mini bar to order from, that way you and your date can sip on some wine while watching Rome and Juliet.
Not Your Grandma’s Shakespeare
Every year they play different Shakespeare plays and bring in different acting teams. Be prepared just because it is a play that you’re familiar with does not mean it will be performed the usual way! My favorite play this year was “Two Gentleman of Verona” it had a 1920’s theme with it’s costumes and music. They took some of the most important lines from the play and turned it into lyrics for the play’s songs. The songs were frequently played with a guitar, drums, and ukulele for a unique Shakespearean experience.
Late Nite Shakes
On Saturday nights there is Late Nite Shakes, an impromptu comedy routine done after the main play. Before the routine begins the audience decides if the “play” will be a comedy or a tragedy. After that the audience will choose a few key words for the play and then the actors are off to the races! The results are unpredictable, outrageous and hilarious.
Food Truck Heaven
One of the best things about Shakespeare in the Park is the food. On
Friday and Saturday nights the food trucks roll up to give out their
tasty treats. Each week the food tends to change, one week there was barbecue and sushi. A few weeks later there was a truck that
specialized in chicken and Mexican food. And there is almost always a
dessert truck. Enough said.
It’s Almost Over!
Summer is almost over and time is running out. Shakespeare in the park will soon be closing down. It will last through August, and then it will be done. But don’t be sad, it will come back next year!
