My boyfriend is probably one of many individuals that understands my love for reading. He smiles every time he comes back into a room when he sees me with a book and is interested whenever I am excited about a new book I have started. But for any guy who is dating or planning on dating a girl who loves to read, here are a few things you should know.
1. Her perfect date will be a bookshop.
It isn't because she doesn't want to spend time with you but because she wants to introduce you to a world that up until recently has been shared only with herself. Some of her friends (ok a lot of her friends) show little to some interest in her love of reading but her perfect date is more than taking her to her favorite bookstore. It is the smallest door to a world that she really wants to share with you.
2. She has an uncanny ability to read and retain instantly
She may never have the right words to say all the time but she will have the greatest capacity to be able to retain anything she reads and pull it out in normal conversation. She'll drop big words in conversation as if nothing has happened. And while you may roll your eyes at it, sometimes you secretly love that she can hold her own.
3. She'll make you want to expand your horizons.
I'm not saying that by dating a girl who reads that automatically you will pick up a book. A girl who reads naturally dreams and has aspirations. This passion eventually bleeds into maybe expanding your own horizons in order to make yourself better whether it is for her or not.
4. The first person she'll turn to in crisis will be her books.
Up until this point, she has only ever had her mind to comfort her when she needs it. Her books have wiped more tears than people have and it's a security blanket that you cannot just rip off. And it may take a while for her to feel comfortable to come to you in a crisis, but it is ok because she'll let you know exactly how she feels when she knows.
5. She's one to handle herself in social situations.
Whether she has plenty of social circle experience or not, put her in front of a crowd and she can animatedly talk about anything with anyone. She prides herself on being worldly and literate that you should feel comfortable leaving her to her own devices even if it is with complete strangers.
6. She'll sometimes cry for no reason.
When she reads her favorite book (one that she probably knows every line by heart), she may burst into tears for no apparent reason except that the adventure is over. A good novel to her is a strong, stiff drink to most and the overwhelming depression that comes with finishing a book is akin to a bad hangover in the morning.
7. Her library will be her proudest possession.
She could have the messiest room or apartment but her library will be her favorite thing to show off to anyone, even you. You'll be able to tell her favorites by the do-geared cover and the worn pages and it will be these novels that she'll share with you like battle scars.
8. She'll incessantly talk about a reading nook.
The girl has got big dreams for her first home and the main attraction will be the wall to wall library, a reading nook, or both. She may have already picked out the colors for the upholstered seating and which window she would want. All of which you will be privy to in time.
9. She'll share every major opinion on a book if you ask her.
You could ask her about TV shows or movies and her reaction to the topic is mild compared to when you talk books to her. She'll speak faster and faster thinking that you won't have all the time in the world to listen to her but all of her opinions matter to her about her books. The way the author writes, whether there was enough character development or the way the plot thickens are a few of the many things that she wants to share with you. And she wants to share it with you only because you asked.
10. She'll forget for a moment about you but comes back to reality soon.
You could leave her for an afternoon engrossed in a book for hours and come back to the far away look of whatever current plot she is in. She may not pay much attention to what you say at first, but eventually she'll come back to reality. My best advice is patience and to offer some guidance because you pulled her from whatever world she was in and the adjustment can be tough.
Dating a girl who can read will be probably the most thrilling relationship you could be in. It may be hard to understand her but you'll know when you have entered the inner sanctum of her complicated mind. But you'll be grateful for the chance just to be with her when she shares her dreams, her best days, and her quiet moments. She's a puzzle to you that you'll be patient enough to figure out just the right pieces that fit.
