Why 'Dancing With The Stars' Is More Than A Competition Show

Because they are dancing for much more than the Mirrorball trophy.

As Season 22 of "Dancing with the Stars" successfully came to a close this past week, we are reminded of what makes this show what it is. While listening to Judge Bruno Tonioli’s outrageous remarks is reason enough to tune in, here is why I feel that "DWTS" has proven itself as far more than a contest.

1. Shows how much hard work goes into dancing

We can all agree that dancing is most definitely a sport, and "DWTS" has shown why each and every week. From giving some insight into the process of choreographing, teaching, and then learning the incredibly difficult routines, we get to glance briefly into the exquisite world of dance.

2. Recognizes some of the greatest dancers and choreographers in the world

If you don’t know much about the current dance scene, watching a season of "DWTS" will quickly fix that. This show allows some of the most talented dancers and choreographers to make a name for themselves on a platform like no other. And before you know it, you will be obsessing over Peta Murgatroyd’s engagement vid or Val Chmerkovskiy’s Summer Tour plans. Just me? OK, fine.

3. Welcomes your favorite celebrities

"DWTS" showcases some of the coolest celebrities. Whether it’s someone you used to watch on "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" or the meteorologist from "Good Morning America," they give any celebrity the chance to be a part of this experience. "DWTS" may bring back your favorite celeb or introduce you to a new one, but no matter what, you will always find someone to root for.

4. Creates genuine, long-lasting friendships among the dancers and celebrities

One of the reasons that people tune in week after week is the love among the cast. Each dancing couple forms an incredible bond. Watching the behind-the-scenes clip before each performance gives us an inside look at the friendships formed between dancers and celebrities. One of the most amazing aspects of this show is seeing the impact that these couples make in each other’s lives after just three months.

5. Allows dancers and celebrities to learn more about themselves

There are countless advantages for the cast as they embark on their dancing journey. One of the greatest outcomes is the opportunity to learn more about themselves. Multiple contestants credit their experience with growing as a person, whether gaining more confidence, more skills, or a new friend. This competition offers contestants so much more than the Mirrorball trophy.

6. Reminds viewers to waltz right out of their comfort zones

When the contestants prove to themselves that they can do something they never believed they could, it undoubtedly inspires the audience to do the same. Whether you are thinking of taking that dance class or are just looking for some courage to make a change in your life, follow the contestants’ lead and go for it.

7. Connects the celebrities with the viewers

When the contestants share their experience with the audience, they form a new relationship with their fans. Calling in to vote for your favorite, learning something new about them, or watching them break out of their shell to try something new are just some of the ways that the "DWTS" community grows.

8. Use dance to tell stories and break barriers

There’s nothing like using dance to tell a story. And that is just what the cast of "DWTS" does each and every week. Stories such as meteorologist, Ginger Zee, sharing her battle with anorexia to help someone struggling or Nyle DiMarco, "DWTS" first deaf contestant and Season 22 Winner (pictured above), proving every week that his talent and courage is truly incredible. This show proves that dance can help communities and inspire an entire nation.

"Dancing With the Stars" is so much more than a competition, it is a show that connects, inspires, and strengthens contestants and viewers alike. Tune into the 23rd season this Fall and quick-step into a show like no other. Dance puns encouraged. Inspiring television guaranteed.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
