Damn, the Internet has done it once again, Daniel.
If you’ve been sleeping for the past week and haven’t communicated with anyone or checked your social media, you’ve probably missed out on another meme that has walked into the social media world and changed our lives. Shame on you for sleeping too much.
Don’t you worry, your girl will catch you up. Two high school boys became Internet sensations last week accidentally. It all started with Joshua Holz filming a Snapchat video of his friend, Daniel Lara, during sixth period at Riverside Polytechnic High School in California. Holz explains in his interview with Ellen DeGeneres that he decided to take a Snapchat of Daniel and out of nowhere he said “Damn, Daniel,” in a funky little voice. After several people Snapchatted him back explaining how funny they thought it was, they decided that they were going to do the same video every day during sixth period.
Pretty much the video is simply Holz saying “Damn, Daniel” with Daniel looking a little bit uncomfortable, and every once in awhile Holz will throw in the occasional “back at it again with the white Vans.”
Like every other meme on the Internet, the humans of the universe cannot just take something, laugh about it and move on. We have to drag this out and have a little fun with it. “Damn, Daniel” has caused several different remixes that’ll make your body move, has turned into ads for businesses and tweets that are a little bit out of hand.
Honestly, no one has any idea why some things on the Internet become viral, some things just do. We’re not sure if it’s the funkiness of Holz voice, the awkwardness of Daniels jump-step, the confusion we had from the dress or the frustration we had with Rebecca Black, but something in these memes make us fall in love with these characters for a few seconds in our life.
I’m only slightly obsessed with social media and by slightly I mean completely. I practically live for the nights when the world explodes with a new meme. I find it the most entertaining thing to just sit back and watch people make jokes about it.
It’s almost as if we’re all 12 again sitting around in our pajamas in the basement hyped up on too much sugar because everyone is saying the most ridiculous things during the hours of the night that we should be sleeping. We’re all somehow bonding through cell phone screens on social media platforms, and I’m completely in love with the fact that we are able to escape the stresses of this world to joke around with strangers across the country.
However, there are some people who don't agree with me on this. Some people find memes annoying. I know, gasp right? Some people find it obnoxious and too much, but that's OK!
What side are you on? Are you obsessed with memes too or would you rather they never existed? And do you think that the "Damn, Daniel" video was taken too far? Let me know!
