Maybe you've beaten your eggs before, but have you ever beaten your coffee? This new trend from South Korea combines the airy, sweet texture of a meringue with the bitterness of coffee and it's perfect for Monday mornings when you need a pick-me-up.
Can I make this? Why bother?
With ingredients found in your everyday household, your boring old morning coffee that you drink just to stay awake can easily turn into a drink resembling that from a fancy cafe. If you're willing to put in the arm strength, that is.
You better wish you have an electric egg beater or something of the sort for this recipe, otherwise you might find yourself stirring that mixture for a long time.
And by a long time, I mean anywhere from ten to twenty minutes. It may not seem like a lot, but it's just like how a minute during exercise goes by way slower than when you're playing video games or chatting with your friends.
Still, if you're looking to bulk up in your arms or just beat everyone else at arm wrestling (weird flex, but OK) pick up your hand mixer. Let's get to business.
What is Dalgona coffee?
Dalgona is a traditional Korean candy sold on the streets, literally meaning "Oh, it's sweet". It used to be more well-known amongst the older generations, and although the younger population doesn't eat it as often anymore, it is still regarded as a tasty snack.
The candy version is made by melting some sugar in a ladle. Once the sugar's boiling, you typically add some baking soda and oil as desired and flatten it out into a sheet of caramel-tasting goodness. Voila, your candy's done. But what about Dalgona coffee?
Dalgona coffee is slightly different to plain dalgona because you're manually incorporating that air into the coffee, whereas the air in Dalgona comes from the baking soda. Also, obviously, you get coffee mixed with it.
OK, I'm hooked. How do you make this drink?
It's relatively simple to make Dalgona Coffee, as it can be made with things that you most likely already have lying around in your cupboard somewhere.
What you'll need :
- Hand whisk / Electric mixer
- Mixing bowl (large, preferably)
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 2 tablespoons instant coffee (It has to be instant or very strong drip coffee, otherwise this won't work)
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 1/2 cup cold milk
- Ice (optional)
First, combine the white sugar, instant coffee and hot water inside the large mixing bowl. This process can take anywhere from two and a half minutes up to twenty minutes depending on the amount of coffee, type of sugar and hotness of your water.
Then you just have to ladle the foam onto your milk and ice, and there you have it : Dalgona Coffee. Feel free to brag to your family and friends as they marvel at your creation, and enjoy!
