5 Ideas To Brighten Your Rainy Day Blues

If you're a student at State (or anywhere in Mississippi for that matter), you have probably gotten so tiredof the absolutely constant rainfall throughout the past couple of weeks. At this point, my textbooks are all crinkled with water damage, I've been wearing nothing but rainboots for two weeks, and my poor umbrella has seen muchbetter days. At the end of the day we can't control the monsoons that have and will continue to pour down on us, but we can do little things every day that bring a little more sunshine into our lives.

Bring a little life to your room

During this whole rain ordeal, nothing has made me happier than coming back to my room and plants. Even while everything is gray outside, I have flowers and ferns in my room that make everything look so much more vibrant. It seems like a small detail, but it honestly makes all the difference. Likewise, with the right atmosphere you can make a rainy day really cozy. Some Walmart LED string lights are only $5 and they add a whole different vibe to your room. You could also get some new blankets or pillows to liven things up more - it's your room, and rainy days are the perfect time to do some new decorating.

Play some board games with your friends

Remember when you were a little kid hanging out with your cousins, so hyped to go do something outside, but then all of a sudden a torrential downpour emerged out of nowhere and you wound stayed inside and having a great time putting together puzzles or finding fun board games? Sometimes a night in can be the best time, and we don't always have to spend it watching Netflix or being on our phones. Recreate that childhood enthusiasm and get your roommates and friends together to play CandyLand or Clue and you might find yourself feeling just like a little kid again.

Cook something fancy... or not

Sometimes it's just nice to get your friends together and cook. It doesn't matter what really - it could be as cookies or an entire four course meal, but regardless you get to stay dry inside and have a good time (and good food) anyways.

Get ready to go absolutely nowhere

The sky may be gray, but your makeup doesn't have to be. Brighten things up with some shimmery color, or take extra time styling your hair. It's really fun and relaxing, and as a bonus looks good too.

And if you're still feeling blue... you could always just leave town

Sometimes we just need a break from our same surroundings anyways. Last weekend I decided to spend my Saturday in Mobile, Alabama to catch some Mardi Gras parades. The weather was sunny and beautiful, and it was so nice to be able to go without a jacket for a day. There are so many cities within a few hours of Starkville (Memphis, Huntsville, New Orleans, etc.) and nothing's stopping you from booking an airbnb and having a nice getaway weekend with your friends, or even just a day trip away from the usual routine.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
