Work In A Cubical Or Travel The World?

Why work for years and years when you could travel the world, country to country for a living?

Work In A Cubical Or Travel The World?
Alana Charboneau

Unfortunately, not all of us can travel the world for a living but when we have free time, we go places or at least daydream about being somewhere else. Right now, most of us ARE in school or work, maybe both! With all the free time we college students have, sarcastically or not, there is always room to watch Netflix. We find the time, After homework and classes, sometimes we just have that in between time to sit down and eat or just relax. A lot of us go to Netflix! From cooking shows with Bobby Flay to movies about kidnappings with Liam Neeson, there is a lot to watch, little time to watch them all and sometimes it is really hard to choose. We usually judge everything by the way it looks. So while looking through all the shows I like to think about if the show will help me to understand a bigger picture or learn something valuable.

If I am watching a tv show that isn't interesting or doesn't benefit me then I won't really care or talk about it. Reality tv is a turn off for me because I am not a fan of what I believe is "fake reality". It's all really just entertainment. Going along the lines of this topic, I don't watch much television anyway but I love movies. Being that I don't watch much tv and finding a show that I liked, I think it's worthy of a response. This show that really opened up my eyes to a bigger, greener and more open for an optimistic world for nature and all of its beings.

The show "Departures" on Netflix (and on Canadian DVD) is about two guys named Scott and Justin (and cameraman Andre) who quit their jobs and old a lot of what they owned to travel the world for a year. They decided to really explore the world and get away from their daily lives.

In their first season, they travel from Canada (where they are from) to Cambodia shooting .50cal guns with and a ton of places in between. In each episode, you see the guys plan and travel to the destination. They meet new people, they try new food, they stay new places and you see them struggle through the challenges of being away from home for longer than a year. Scott gets a little homesick and it really hits Justin, especially because everybody they know and love is back at home and they are out traveling the world.

Scott and Justin became really close over the course of this adventure, being with each other for an entire year. I think this show becomes really interesting to watch as you get deeper into it and learn more about the guys as individuals and really see how the places around the world change their perspectives about life. It is really a real-world experience and like informational shows about people traveling around the world, these guys are doing it all on their own.

At the beginning of each episode, Scott or Justin talks about where they are going and what they expect when going to their new destination. I would say Scott is the more organized one where Justin is just there for the fun and the experience. Justin is very goofy but I think without the two different personalities with the two of them (and Andre) they get around the world in a really fascinating and kind of almost spiritual way.

In the first season, the guys go to Ascension Island which is located in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. Ascension Island has no modern internet connection to the rest of the world so in the show they had to send emails off very old computers, which they traveled pretty far to use. Being on such a small, remote island, very few people live there and very few airplanes land. The majority of the trip in Ascension, they ate spaghetti until they found a local fisherman to take them into the waters to catch GIANT tuna. This man says he catches up to 50 tuna an hour and they are BIG. This show is full of funny and really informational experiences that I would most definitely use in the future because I hope to one day travel around the country and hopefully the world.

I hope people read my article and go and watch "Departures"! Traveling to new and far places in a seat of your own home. Watch it when you aren't busy and you will enjoy it; learning a lot along the way. Scott and Justin would appreciate it a lot and I don't think you will regret it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
