"No Country For Old Men" is a film that was released in 2008 and is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It is based on the book of the same name by Cormac McCarthy. The film follows Llewelyn Moss who comes across a drug deal gone wrong in the middle of the desert and then comes across a bag of about $2 millions. The movie is quite possibly in my top 5 all-time favorite movies, from the locations used to film to the mystery and ambiguity around the villain of the film, Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardeem).
Let's talk about the locations that the film takes place in! The film takes place in Texas mostly. The locations used for this film fit the film perfectly. There are wide open spaces and a lot of rural locations. This is one of the many reasons why I love this film. The locations themselves are places like motels, trailer parks, and open Texas landscape. Silly reasons to like a movie, but don't worry that's not all!
One of the reasons this film is so good is the plot is given to us through the eyes of Llewelyn who knows nothing about what happened, why it happened or how it happened. We get some small details as the film progresses, but never truly know the story behind the drug deal scene at the beginning of the movie. It leaves a lot open to the interpretation.
The characters are also great. Anton Chigurh, who is the villain of the film, is a hired hitman sent to track down the money. He has no remorse and kills the men who hired him as well. Llewelyn Moss, who is the films protagonist, is a man who seems bored with everyday life, at least that is my interpretation of him. What makes Llewelyn a great character is the fact that he is so believable. He isn't some super soldier who is going to kill anyone who stands in his way. He is basically that guy you see at work everyday. Then there is Tommy Lee Jones character who is a sheriff of a small town in Texas. He is basically retired and is a World War II veteran. He is also a protagonist.
I highly recommend watching 'No Country For Old Men" if you have not seen it yet. It is a great film!
