While listening to Hozier’s self-titled, debut album, I couldn’t help but notice how dark and brooding his lyrics are. This may be due to the fact that he frequently speaks of blood, which led me to the speculation that Hozier could quite possibly be a vampire himself. Some may argue that these lyrics are not meant to be taken literally, but I disagree. Here I have chosen specific songs and lyrics throughout his album that prove this theory.
1. Song: "Take Me To Church".
Lyric: “I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife / Offer me that deathless death / Good God, let me give you my life.”
In this hit single, Hozier is clearly anguished over the fact that he has been bitten and turned into a vampire. He would give anything to end his life, however whatever death he receives will be “deathless,” since vampires are already dead and can’t easily be killed. At least, not by a sharpened knife that is (unless the knife was wooden). Plus, what’s more sinful than a vampire?
2. Song: "Angel of Small Death & The Codeine Scene".
Lyric:“Feeling more human and hooked on her flesh / I lay my heart down with the rest at her feet / Fresh from the fields, all feeder and fertile / It’s bloody and raw, but I swear it is sweet.”
Hozier has found someone who makes him feel like a human again, probably because of how passionate her blood makes him feel. He’s addicted to that stuff like a drug. It may be bloody and raw, but man is it fresh and sweet.
3. Song: "In A Week".
Lyric: “I have never known sleep like this slumber that creeps to me / I have never known colors like this morning reveals to me”
Sounds like some really good sleep. Who wouldn’t sleep well in a coffin, as vampires do, which blocks out all outside light and sound? Vampires also have heightened senses, enabling them to see colors like they’ve never seen them before.
4. Song: "Work Song".
Lyric: “I’m so full of love I could barely eat / There’s nothing sweeter than my baby”
That woman’s blood must be really delicious. It must be his love for her that makes it that much more satisfying. This is starting to sound kind of like "Twilight"…
5. Song: "Cherry Wine".
Lyric: “The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine”
Alright Hozier, we get it. This girl has really sweet blood.
6. Song: "It will Come Back".
Lyric: “It can't be unlearned / I've known the warmth of your doorways / Through the cold, I'll find my way back to you”
It’s common knowledge that a vampire can’t enter your home until you invite it through your doorway. Once you do, it can enter anytime it wants… it will come back.
If this lyrical analysis wasn’t proof enough, just take a look at his album cover. We see Hozier’s figure and his long, luscious hair. However, his skin is not visible. Could this be because he is unable to see his reflection in the mirror, as vampires are unable to do? And he’s been a vampire so long that he doesn’t even remember what he looks like, therefore he had to use other imagery to make up for his face?
What do you think? Could Hozier be a creature of the night?
