All of us have our own individual styles on how to apply our makeup. You may think you have the perfect routine but here is the correct way to apply your makeup to reduce the amount of mistakes and smudges:
1. Primer
You want to start with your primer/moisturizer of choice. I hope this is obvious to most of you, but please use a minimal amount and spread it evenly. If you use eyeshadow primer, use it now too. If you don't know what that is, look into it because it is a life saver!
2. Eyeshadow
There is a heated debate on if you should apply foundation or eyeshadow first, but my argument is that you want to apply your eyes prior to foundation. We all know shadow flurries onto your face as you dust it on, creating a light shadow under your eyes and around. If you start with this step then you can correct any messes.
3. Eyeliner & Mascara
Your wings can be uneven and you can paint your under eyes with your mascara, so these two go next. It takes real skill to not mess up at this step, so apply with caution! Luckily you haven't applied any concealer under your eyes yet so you can quickly clean everything up.
4. Foundation
Now your primer has set in and you are ready to start with your foundation. If you use liquid put that on first, then follow it with powder. Go to work with your blenders and brushes to even out any discolorations!
5. Concealer
Some like to use concealer before foundation; however, if you do it this way then you will use less in the long run. Your foundation will cover more than you expect and then you just have to go in to correct a few spots with concealer! Also do your dark circles a favor and apply some there, then bake it in with some powder to seal everything in.
6. Bronzer/Blush
Start your contour and apply that bright pink along your cheek bones. This step obviously needs to go after your foundation/concealer steps. If you use liquid bronzer and blush it shouldn't really affect this step at all. Also don't skip this step, otherwise you'll look pasty and lifeless...
7. Brows
Fill those bad boys in with your powder & pencils. They will need some help after you spread foundation everywhere by subduing their natural color.
8. Lips
The last step is to wipe your lips free of the foundation spillage and apply your favorite gloss or lipstick. You really shouldn't skip this step, especially if you have followed all of the other steps. This last step will complete your look and bring the final touch of color you need!
Of course all of these steps are not necessary but hopefully this helps you establish a system or alter yours if it isn't working. This order may not work for everyone but figure out what works for you and embrace it!
