Conventionality Vs. Morality

Search for truth and write your own script!

Human society has somehow managed to set up a book of rules. In this book of rules, there are hundreds and hundreds of statements and expectations that are considered "absolute truths" by most of the population. Take the Ten Commandments as an example. They are un-negotiable, unchanging and unsusceptible to time. Everyday humans who live in a society along with other people are exposed to someone else's idea of an absolute truth, which little by little disintegrates our brain's ability to decide for our very own self what the truth is.

Friedrich Nietzsche makes the argument that there are no absolute truths. He proposes the idea that truth is based on context, history, language and that it is dependent on so many things. Think about this: humans create language, language states the so-called "truth," and there are so many languages, so which language speaks the truth? In other words, WHAT IS THE TRUTH?

That's where YOU come in.

Your job is to find out what the truth is. Your job is to write your own script, based on what your gut tells you is right. Your stomach is connected to your nervous system, which lets you feel your visceral and instinctive feelings.

A few of my favorite Rebels who searched out their own truths...

note: some of the following rebels are fictitious.

1. Oscar from Oscar: An Inquiry into the Nature of Sanity?

"Was he a sane man confronted by his own insanity or the insanity of others?" (Wilson 104)

Peter J. Wilson was an author who did field word in an Island called Providencia. He met a very special person there, his name was Oscar. Oscar was regarded as insane, and mentally ill, little did they know that Oscar was a genius in a way that was incomprehensible to regular people.

2. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust

Faust wanted to re-define human desires, and he was not afraid to get into trouble with the Devil.

3. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King died fighting for the truth!

4. Anthony Kiedis (Lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers)

In his book "Scar Tissue," Kiedis takes his readers on an enlightening story about struggle with authority. He was an artist who simply refused to accept the already established truths.

5. Dr. Larch from "The Cider House Rules" by John Irving

Dr. Larch was the owner of an orphanage in the 1920's in a small, impoverished town in Maine. He also performed abortions for women who were not prepared to have a baby.

6. Harvey Milk

Being "straight" was simply not Harvey Milk's cup of tea, and he was not about to let anyone tell him otherwise.

7. Claude Monet

Claude Monet rejected everything that was traditional in art and launched a revolution in the world of art, impressionism. He painted his impression of what he saw! He painted his truth!

The truth is beneath the surface. You will have to look for it, and get ready, because in order to live by your own truth, you have to fight.

So, get ready, get set, GO!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
