Now before you start reading this article, stop yourselves for two seconds. Delete your preconceived notions about the words "conservative" and "liberal." This is not an article about my political views...
When I was younger, all I wanted to do is wear booty shorts, belly shirts and display my cleavage for the world to see. Of course my parents were not having that. Bermuda shorts and turtlenecks were preferred. I wasn't even allowed to wear the infamous gauchos that dominated middle school hallways. I couldn't wait until I was "grown" so that I could wear whatever I wanted.
Now that I am pretty much grown, my mindset has completely changed. I did have my phase of the booty shorts and belly shirts, but adding 15 pounds and stretch marks to the mix definitely nipped that in the bud quickly. But now, even if I were back to the size that I was in high school, I think that I would still have my current mindset. No longer do I feel comfortable with my right butt cheek hanging from the bottom of my shorts.
Unfortunately, in today's times my mindset is a rare thing. Half-naked girls on Instagram are glorified. Now it is popular to take pictures in bed with just your Calvin Klein bra and undies because it's "art." Going out on the town is another story. You are for sure to see more boobies and booties than you would prefer. But those are the girls who get the most likes, the most boys, and the most free drinks at the bar. For conservative dressers like myself, it's frustrating and discouraging.
If you are more on the conservative side like myself, you may spend time wondering why guys don't approach you at the bar or on the dance floor. You may spend hours in mall dressing rooms trying on risqué clothing and telling yourself that you look cute before throwing all of your items back on the rack. You may creep on the Instagram pages of girls who get hundreds of likes doing the annoying pose of perching on the bathroom sink to make their butt look big. And no matter how much you want the attention from guys and random "likers" on the Internet, you can never bring yourself to change your ways.
I don't wear shorts and skirts down to my ankles (most days) and I don't wear turtlenecks. I show skin. I just prefer not to show all of my skin. When it comes to clothing, the saying "less is more" does not apply in my book. For the girls who like to display their next to naked bodies online and in person, you go girl. I am not here to say that you are doing anything wrong.
But for the girls who don't choose to display their bodies, you also aren't doing anything wrong. Don't change your personal style to fit into the mold of people you are nothing like. It's okay to be the only one with your cleavage covered. Don't let society influence who you think you ought to be. Stay true to yourself and embrace your conservative mindset. You are a rare butterfly. Someday you will be appreciated.
