Confessions Of A Lifeguard

Many people think they understand what being a lifeguard is all about. However, unless you actually are one, then you absolutely have no clue. Here's a list to give a preview of what really goes on during one of our daily shifts.

1. No, it’s not cute when you go in the deep end and pretend to drown; it’s actually really aggravating so just stop.

2. Thunder and lightning are our best friends.

3. Lifeguard? You forgot to say grounds keeper, janitor, mechanic, maid, and babysitter, too.

4. You don’t realize how forgetting your sun glasses can ruin your day until you have to sit in direct sun for a few hours squinting like an idiot.

5. Yes, I know CPR. No, I will not give you mouth to mouth unless you are actually in need of it. “This is not The Sandlot.”

6. We can’t just swim with our customers whenever we want so don’t even bother asking.

7. Do we really have to yell “no running” a million times for you to finally understand?

8. The old ladies who bring us treats are the real MVPs.

9. No, I’m not checking you out. You’re the only one in the pool. Am I supposed to look at the clouds?

10. Shout out to the customers who come the last 30 minutes we’re open. Seriously, y’all are the best, she said sarcastically.

11. You do realize this is a pool, not a bathtub? Glad we established that.

12. This isn’t McDonalds so you don’t “have it your way.” Follow our rules and we won’t have a problem. Kapeesh?

13. Our favorite customers are the ones who just sun bathe and never actually put a foot in the pool.

14. Vacuuming the pool is the best part about the summer, and the worst part about the winter.

15. The dumbest question you could ask us is, “Can you swim?” Like really?

16. “I just love it when you have the whole pool, yet you decide to jump in right by me. I definitely didn’t want to stay dry,” said no lifeguard ever.

17. Nothing is more aggravating than when you and your co-workers do interval shifts and one leaves you on the stand past the switching time.

18. Saying corny pool pick-up lines is NOT original. You aren’t the only one who comes swimming.

19. Rainy days are the best because they consist of Netflix binge watching.

20. This job has made us pros at people-watching. Just call us professional creepers.

21. Every time I’m poolside or around any body of water, my lifeguard instincts automatically kick in unwillingly.

22. People begin to question what ethnicity you are about halfway through the summer.

23. We really do get those horrendous tan lines.

24. You begin to think you’re really a fish because you’re in and around water so much.

25. No matter how much we complain, we all secretly love our job.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
