Recently, Twenty One Pilots, a two-man band hailing from Columbus, Ohio, made a stop in their hometown for
their 2015 Blurryface Tour with Echosmith and Finished Ticket. Because of a friend, it marked my very first concert. I
didn’t really know what to expect beforehand and all I had were some tips
another friend of mine gave me. Those tips actually were helpful and after going, I
thought about some of my own dos and don'ts of how to survive a concert.
1. Don’t know what to wear?
Keep it comfortable. A band T-shirt is always a good route to go. You will be there for quite a while, so you don’t want to keep readjusting your clothing or feel restricted. Definitely wear comfortable shoes because you will be on your feet a lot. On a side note, dress for the weather, especially if it is outside. Bringing a jacket that can easily be tied around your waist or wrapped around your shoulders is a good choice.
2. Always practice “convenience.”
Don’t overload yourself with objects you don’t really need. Only take the essentials and always keep them close. Unfortunately, sticky fingers will still be out there.
3. Sweat will most likely become a friend of yours.
I know gross, but it’s true. Just remember to show a tad more love to your deodorant. Crowd + temperature + being hyped = perspiration. But if you smell good, that’s all that matters.
4. Have a little R&R before hand.
Having a good night's sleep or taking a nap beforehand will allow you to keep your energy while you are singing and dancing away. Don’t forget to stay hydrated as well. You don’t want to faint or blackout.
5. Early bird gets the worm.
Leave and get on the road early in case traffic is bad or there is a ton of construction. Arriving to the concert early will be very beneficial. Not only will you not feel rushed, but you could explore the possibilities of standing in line for merchandise or concession stands. You will also be able to find your seat much easier with the lights on.
6. Do some homework.
If you have to do a bit of traveling, do some research and know where you’re going. Not only will you have a better sense of the area, but you might learn about some cool things or places and decide to make a couple of stops here and there.
7. You’re wrong if you think you will just sit still.
Even if you don’t know the band, it is guaranteed you will be on your feet cheering (insert: As you wear your comfy shoes). Plus no one else will be the wiser, so feed off of the audience’s excitement and join in. Don’t be afraid to get loud. In the end, it will totally be worth it if you happen to have a hoarse voice the next morning. If there are any intermissions, take the chance to sit for bit before you’re up and at it again.
8. Become the paparazzi.
Don’t do any B&E or crazy car chases (or running out onstage), but constantly take videos and pictures. Capture moments to look at when you are finally level-headed once again. Share them and possibly your screaming as well for videos picking it up.
9. Side effect: You might possibly still feel it the next morning.
Have ibuprofen ready because the noise level will definitely mess with you, so naturally a headache is no stranger. Dedicate the next day for a bit more R&R as you get over the rush of attending a concert.
10. Most importantly, have fun and be safe.
Dance and sing. Make signs and hold them up. Get into the mood. Contribute to the noise level. If the band wants you to sway your arms, sway them. If they want you to jump, jump. No one is judging because everyone there just wants to have fun and enjoy the concert. While having fun, always remember to be safe as well as responsible.
All in all, going to a concert is simply amazing. From the audience singing the songs and seeing Ohio State's Brutus onstage to celebrate his 50th birthday, all the way to Tyler and Josh performing while the mosh pit held them up, it was far better than I thought to expect. Fans were fan-girling without a care as they had a good time. (I do believe several may have fainted). I know I had an awesome time and can agree that Twenty One Pilots definitely knows how to put on a show. Check out their sound through their music video for Stressed Out.
