Ever since I started telling friends, family, and even strangers in high school that I was going to college to study communication, I have gotten the standard responses: Why? What can you do with that? That's an easy major. And what was my typical response to the haters?
What can't I do with this major!?
I specifically chose to study communication because I did not want to be stuck in a certain job field or career. For example, if I chose to study education or to pursue a medical degree, I would most likely only be able to find careers within those areas. However, with a degree in communication, I could work anywhere. And I mean anywhere.
To all of the haters, I challenge you to find a career or job where basic communication skills are not valued. Find a career or job where oral and written communication skills are not required. Please. Please, do.
Now that I am nearly finished with my sophomore year of college pursuing a degree in communication with a concentration in digital media, one would think that the haters and swarm of questions dripping in negative connotation would cease, but no.
"Com classes are so easy."
"I switched majors to communication because it was easier."
I'm sure that other communication majors can understand what it is like to hear these comments - unwanted and not prompted comments, might I add. There is nothing more infuriating than somebody questioning your hard work and efforts towards reaching a goal.
So, the next time you think to criticize a communication major, don't.
And while we are at it, don't criticize any majors for being "easier" or "unnecessary" compared to your major. We are all working our asses off to contribute to society once we graduate. I didn't ask for your opinion. Sit down.
*mic drops*
P.S. Three years down the road when you or your company goes down the toilet from a scandal or some other incompetencey, don't call a PR agency to fix your problem. They were once communication majors *gasp*, and are too busy doing "easy" work to help you and your "problem."
