I'm NEVER coming home!

Common Thoughts While Studying Abroad
Caitlin Maressa

If you've ever had the pleasure to study abroad or are currently studying abroad, we all have had those similar thoughts that cross our mind. Deciding to study abroad has by far been one of the best experiences of my life and I'm pretty sure anyone else that's been would agree. When your peers or friends say it'll change your life, listen. They're not being cheesy, it's the truth. While indulging myself in another culture these are some thoughts that crossed my mind:

1. "I CANNOT believe I'm here. This isn't real life! How am I living in another country?!"

(Proceeds to hit friend like a little girl and squeal)

2. "Will people judge me if I'm not speaking their language?"

3. "Do I have down the street style here, because I do NOT want to look like an American and draw attention!"

4. "Did that guy really just stare at us for 5 minutes? How is that acceptable here? What a creep."

5. "I can't believe I get to travel to so many different countries in such a little time!!

Switzerland this week, oh hey Barcelona is next week and a 10 day island hopping spring break to Greece....my life is casual."

6. "Do I really care to watch anyone's 'snaps' at home, like I'm abroad?"

7. "Why aren't there this many beautiful people in one area at home?!"

8. "Did I just meet my soul mate?"

9. "Is it acceptable to be this hungover and stay in the house all day while we're in another country?"

10. "I've never walked so many miles in my life. I better be toned at the end of this trip!"

11. "Why isn't food this amazing in America?"

12. "Is it cool to be on an all-carb diet if you're abroad?"

13. "CAN I LIVE HERE PLEASE?!"

14. "Sorry Mom and Dad, I don't know how my money is going so fast!"

15. "I wish we we're rich!"

16. "We're living like celebrities right now and I never want this trip to end."

17. "Thinking about having to go home is actually depressing."

18. "I want to keep traveling the rest of my life!"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
