Listen, guys, communication majors are not the stereotypes you make them out to be. But undoubtedly you probably believe some of these lies about us ...
1. "It's the easy major."
Think about this one with me for a second. You choose your major because it's your passion. So let's say your passion is science. Naturally, those classes will be a little easier for you because that's what you like to do. Therefore, you could kind of say this about any major. I guarantee a political science major wouldn't find design and advertising classes easy because they simply wouldn't be interested.
2. "They don't work half as hard as 'x' majors."
I've got two words for you: group projects. Ask any communication junior or senior and they'll tell you that's all they do, and they're all due in the same week.
3. "They're all in sororities/fraternities."
OK, this one is actually kind of true, but not totally.
4. "They all just want to be event planners."
Dear God, no.
5. "Anyone can be a comm major."
I would like to refer you back to point No. 1: If it's not your passion/something you love, sure you could do it, but would you love it? Would you want it? Probably not.
6. "They don't know how to do math."
I mean, that's only partially true. Until you get to research class, that is.
7. "You can't get a real job with that degree."
From advertising to design agencies to PR firms to small business and startups, I don't think I'll have a problem finding a job. Also, friendly reminder that Denzel, Matthew McConaughey, Oprah, Carrie Underwood, and Brad Pitt were all communication majors. Those are pretty great jobs if you ask me.
8. "It's not an exciting major."
Listen. Communication literally changes every single day because it's a current and cultural topic. If our professors aren't keeping up with society and current topics, we are behind. Between social media, design trends, and advertising tactics, by the time we graduate, the freshman class is being taught the new things we'll be learning in the workforce.
9. "All they need is to go to class and graduate."
*Ahem* Portfolio, job applications, working on personal brand, freelance work, the list goes on. And that's on top of all our schoolwork.
10. "They don't even need to study."
False. Media Law.
