5 Tips To Help Combat The Spring Semester Blues

This my first spring semester as a college student, and I didn't realize how different it can be from fall semester. Energy is lower, everyone is getting sick, and the weather is usually awful. Many of my professors pointed out that their spring semester students often do worse than students who took the same course in the fall. I didn't think that I would face the same lack of motivation that other students do, but I was mistaken. The spring semester blues can be tough to overcome, but through trial and error, I've found a few things that are useful for me.

1. Drink. Water.

Yes, you've heard this before. But it doesn't make it any less important. Drinking water is one of the simplest acts you can take to help you feel more healthy and just better overall. Water bottles are everywhere when the weather is warm, but you should keep carrying your water bottle with you even in the cold winter months. Track your water intake and set a goal (example: 64 ounces) to drink every day. Stay hydrated!!!

2. Develop a new routine as soon as possible.

Unlike high school, each semester in college is completely different from the one before. Just when your fall semester routine is locked down, winter break comes and it's over. Adjusting to a new routine can be tough, but find things that make it easier. Plan out when and where you'll get meals on busy class days. Find new study spots or return to your old favorites. Lastly, find something that motivates you to get up and get moving - even if it's just a trip to Starbucks.

3. Take classes you enjoy.

Many people tend to schedule all of the classes they're excited for in the fall, leaving only boring, required classes for the spring semester. Find out which classes will also be offered in the spring and wait to take some of those. If you have a class that you're looking forward to, going to class will be that much easier!

4. Join a new club.

Even if you're not sure you want to be in the club forever, take a chance and try something new! Most clubs recruit in the spring as well as the fall or even welcome new members at all times. Find something you think you might enjoy and try going to a meeting. Maybe you'll find a new passion!

5. Spend time with friends.

When the weather is bad, it's easy to lock yourself in your dorm room all day. Getting out and doing something with friends will make you feel better and give you a change of scenery. Take turns switching which dorm you hang out at so the same person doesn't have to walk in the cold every time. Watch a movie, play a game, or just work on homework and watch TikToks together. Just spend time with the people you enjoy being around.

Good luck battling the spring semester blues, you can do it! Only a few months left!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
