The Color Black: A Poem

More than your everyday color.

The Color Black: A Poem
Bri Licciardi

The color
Black
So simple, yet
So complex
There’s so much more to
Black
Than what most notice
And believe they see
Often overlooked
Often misunderstood
But if one would take some time
To unravel
Black
To see each thing it can do
Everything it can be
All that it truly is
One would see
Black
Among other things
Through newborn eyes
From a glance
Black
Seems common
The usual
Found anywhere
But if truly considered, is
Black
Merely the common color
Found at any corner?
Or, is it
More?
Though the more beautiful colors
Such as violet, turquoise, or magenta
Attract more eyes
Black
May be just as intruiging
Just as beautiful
Memorable, even
Strange, one may think
For a color such as
Black
To be memorable
But unlike the many shades of blue,
Or the shades of red,
Black
Stands on its own
It tries its best to work
With every color
To understand how to fit with
Each and every hue that exists
Since every glowing color deserves
At least one other that
Strives to understand
Despite its inability to
Fit with certain shades –
Navy, or brown –
Black
Nevertheless attempts to fit most, all even
There is an entire world inside
Black
It is more than a plain, common color
That is often just seen around
Black
Is anything and everything
The color behind your eyelids-
Black
When you close them
To be one with the music
Or to take a moment if
Your heart is feeling too much
Bright things
The final E-flat of Overture 1812,
(As the audience roars)
(Your hands, now pins and needles)
The color of the ocean,
(When you are there past sunset)
(With your partner, friend)
Dark things
Dried blood, darker and darker
(Intending to scar)
The ink, on your only letter
(From a lost loved one)
(A parent, perhaps)
This, and so much more
In just one color
Black
Is more than
Your everyday color
So simple, yet
So complex
I am the color
Black

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
