A College Student's Holiday Season According to Star Trek

Tis the season to be a Trekkie!

It's arrived! That glorious thing called "the holiday season"! Of course, it's been here for about two weeks, but for us college students just getting out of school, it feels as though the season is just now kicking off. To commemorate its coming, let's turn it over to our favorite crew (or crews) to narrate the events from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day! Turn up the Christmas music, grab the popcorn, and picture Bones and Spock wearing Santa hats Kirk put on them with respective grumpy and perplexed looks on their faces.

1. First, Thanksgiving happened.

And everyone ate like a horde of Tribbles. Fortunately, unlike with Tribbles, there were still leftovers.

2. Then we camped outside Macy's for five hours waiting for the doors to open on Black Friday.

Those of us who are more impatient give our friends significant cause to worry about our health at this point. No, I'm not being dramatic. I assure you, I really am dying over here!

3. We spent five more hours battling other people for sales.

Yes, this is exactly what it looked like.

4. We came away with bargains we were proud of...

...and then others, not so much.

5. A few more blissful days of break...

Ah, the relaxation.

6. And then suddenly we're thrust back into the fray of Dead Week!

Just keep telling yourself that. You might actually start to believe it by the end of the week. Seriously, this is my crisis mantra.

7. The weight of assignments is bearing down on you...

and then your professor adds more last minute!

8. Dead Week is over! Hallelujah!

Cue the celebratory dance party! But wait...

9. Then you remember, you still have finals to go.

Depending on who you are, this results in either ugly or pretty crying. Or, as demonstrated by our dear James T. Kirk, generic dramatic stares of horror.

10. One down...two down...

You're starting to seriously doubt your ability to survive this.

11. Huzzah!

You're free, free! Free at last!

12. There are, of course, some tearful goodbyes.

This is the hardest part of leaving for the semester, is parting with your friends. I mean, it's usually not as bad as this. But it comes fairly stinking close.

13. But then, you're off for home!

14. Hopefully, your family joyously greets you.

Or, maybe they try to stun you with a phaser as soon as you walk in the door. Let's assume it's the first option here.

15. You think you'll be getting some peace and quiet.

But you're wrong.

16. Because suddenly, everyone wants to see you!

Hey, I never said it was a bad kind of wrong. With all this time now on your hands, people will be at your doorstep constantly, which is great for the extroverts, but for the introverts...

...it can be a little draining.

17. Then there's the amount of shopping to be done.

Seriously, Christmas shopping is more complicated than one expects. In fact, as far as shopping goes, if you're looking to find anything in abundance this time of year, it's the equivalent of...well, putting on a red shirt.

18. Baking is great this time of year!

Unless you have a tendency to set things on fire. Then it sucks.

19. When you select a tree, it must be optimally sized for maximum festivity.

Some people just do not appreciate the importance of this.

20. And then the ornaments must be equally so in their placement.

Trust me, the fate of the Federation depends on this.

21. Not to mention all the other decorating that must be done.

(Eye of the Tiger starts playing in the background) Must...be...perfect...

22. Ah, let the family gatherings commence!

Prepare for the onslaught of relatives. Because if your family is as big as mine...this is generally what it looks like. Minus the phaser rifles and look of horror at the end.

23. The one uncle who is constantly advising you to get any degree but English.

Best to just smile and nod.

24. The liberal cousin who just has to ruffle your conservative grandpa's feathers.

Though there is usually a wonderful amount of sass involved.

25. But, truth be told, as much as we complain about them, most of our people are pretty great.

26. And our older, married cousins have managed to produce some pretty cute kids.

Author's Note: In which it's rather difficult to find any children GIFs for new Trek, so I just stuck in a picture of Chekov being cute. Your argument is invalid.

27. Once again, everyone eats like Tribbles.

No, Spock, it is necessary. And what is necessary is never unwise.

28. But then you wake up and realize...

...it's Christmas morning!

29. You get some fairly awesome gifts...

...and then not so much.

30. And this is the look on your face when your sister opens that perfect gift you got her.

31. Finally, you pass out on the couch.

Just maybe don't crush anyone's skull who wants to wake you. Thus concludes another awesome Christmas!

32. Now New Year's is fast upon us!

Well, that was quick. Time to wrap up another year of awesomeness...wait...

Never mind that. It's 2016. Warp us as far away from it as possible.

33. You debate whether it's actually been a good year or not as the ball drops...

34. And 2017 is ushered in!

Well, it was a bit of a struggle, but hey, we made it!

"Could you not have gotten here a wee bit sooner?" - Montgomery Scott

Let's hope it's a good one...or at least a better one.

Happy holidays, everybody.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
