College is a weird time; I don’t really know what I’m doing with my life. Sometimes I don’t even know how I manage to get myself dressed, I’m a certified train wreck. But college has also taught me a thing or two along the way.
I learned how to just get over it.
Yeah, sometimes things don’t go your way. Trust me, nobody understands that better than me; but once I finally realized to just get over it, life started becoming easier. I came to terms with the fact that sometimes life, school, work (basically everything) is going to punch you in the face, but you have to get up and move on.
I learned that you need a solid group of friends.
College is the time that friends become your biggest supporters and constant reminders that you are going to be all right. I wouldn’t have made it through these last few years without my gal pals and am so thankful for their constant love and compassion.
I leaned that it’s ok to be sad sometimes.
Sometimes, life sucks and it makes you sad, and that is alright. It took me so long to realize that even if I have an off week where nothing goes right, it’s ok to sit at home and wallow in self pity. I always said that things could be worse, which is so true. But sometimes it's important to make yourself face the idea that you are sad. Once you deal with that and move on, it will be a positive encouragement to remember next time things get a bit rocky. Just don’t let yourself get so caught up in the fact that life is hard keep you from living the life you have been given. I know it sounds cliché, but it is so important to remember.
I learned that your family is your backbone.
In the years I have been in college, my family has become my main squad. My brother is easily one of my best friends and I find that the older I get, the more my parents have good advice. They are always there no matter what mistakes I have made and how many tests I fail, they are there to offer guidance and support to help me get through the rough days.
I learned that even my bad days are good days.
Some days nothing can seem to go right. But I promise you, something in that day is good and positive, it's just up to you to find it. I didn’t truly realize this until a few weeks ago when I was having a crazy week and it seemed like none of my hard work was paying off. Then, something so small, yet so good happened and I realized that there really is no such thing as a bad day. My dad always use to say “No such thing as a bad day, just a bad attitude,” it’s a quote by Coach John Wooden, and I never grasped what that really means until that day. You only have a bad day because you have convinced yourself it is a bad day. Sometimes you just have to step up and deal with your problems face on and then move on.
College has a way of knocking you down, but it also teaches you how to get back up and come back even stronger than before. Look around and see how many people you have around you ready to offer you their love and support and utilize them.
