Attending a proud-to-be-nerd school, you meet a lot of interesting characters. While being here, I have noticed that a majority of the time you can guess someone’s major by their personality. Most people believe that all nerds and geeks are the same, but they do have distinct differences. In all honesty, these observations are not hard lines. Everyone here at WPI is nerdy and special in their own way. Students have a variety of majors they can choose to study, and each one has its eccentricities.

Aerospace Engineering

Told their parents they wanted to be an astronaut, but realized NASA wasn’t sending anyone else up in space. So building the shuttles that transport stuff into space, was close enough. They are the ones who are always saying, “To me, it is rocket science.”

Architectural Engineering

Architectural Engineers like building stuff, but feel they are too good for construction. In their free time, you can find them building forts out of leftover Amazon boxes.

Chemical Engineering

Think they are top dog of campus, because they chose the hardest engineering major available. If you say organic chemistry in front of them, they will shorten it to “orgo” and look at you, like you are the stupid one. Will probably end up taking your job.

Biomedical Engineering

These are the people who wanted to be doctors, but did not want to go to school for 12 years or deal with people. They are the socially inept doctors of the world.

Mechanical Engineering

Here we have the engineers who could not decide a concentration, and you will often see them walking around campus flustered about what classes to take next. Their favorite activity is using a strain gauge.

Electrical/Computer Engineering

They sit and build computers for fun. Or if they are on the gamer track, they never show their face outside of their room. You often hear them talking about some oculus thing you never heard of, but it actually sounds fun. They also have an electronic setup that rivals most.

Interactive Media and Game Design

It is the closest thing to liberal arts degree you will find at a tech school. These are the students who played video games until 4am, and thought, "Why not make a career out of it".

Robotics

Robotics majors spend all their time perfecting their robots rather than themselves. It is basically fight club for the athletically handicapped.

Actuarial Math

Numbers and statistics is their life. They often have glasses by the age of 20 from looking at all those figures. Do not underestimate them or bet against them, they are prone to winning games of chance.

Undecided

They really don’t know what to do with their life, but heard that engineers make a lot of money.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
