Have you ever been jamming out to your favorite song and suddenly realize how much you can relate to the lyrics? Ben Rector has many of those songs. No matter what year you are in, it is a guarantee that these lyrics will fit perfectly into your life during your college career.
1. Moving away
"I feel like taking chances, I feel a lot like seventeen [or eighteen].
I feel like windows rolled down, new city, streets, and cabs.
I feel like anything can happen."
From "Brand New"
Moving to college is a huge step in life. It's scary. At 18 years old, moving to a new town is an adventure. Take chances, explore your new home, and make anything happen. This is what college is all about.
2. Breaking the mold
"I don't know how long I have to keep reminding myself
To be who I want to be and not somebody else,
I just thought by now I'd figure out the who and how I want to be
Cause I still let myself worry way too much
And it ends up fine enough.
It always has and does still now"
From "Note to Self"
As a freshman, it's hard to shake the high school feelings of fitting in. Coming to college, you quickly learn that there isn't a mold you have to fit in. You can be anything and anyone you want to be and, chances are, you will find several people just like you. Life is consistently changing and often times, you will lie in bed at night keeping yourself awake with worry. Thankfully, everything turns out fine enough in the end, whether we choose to worry or not.
3. Making money
"Making money, it isn't easy
And it sure won't make you happy."
From "Making Money"
Just about sums up all of college life in two simple lines. You hear stories of broke college kids, and it's not a lie! You will be caught digging for change under your car seats and you will live by the saying, "If it's free, give me three!" But the truth is, the joys of college are found in the friendships you make and the adventures you take with these friends along the way.
4. Having fun
"Last night was crazy, yeah we tore it up again.
Kicked off our shoes and went to bed by 9 p.m.
We were balling and Netflix.
We turned it up to ten.
Last night was crazy."
From "Crazy"
College comes with the anticipation of crazy nights and stories to tell, but let's be real, most nights turn into binge watching Netflix with your closest friends until midnight.
5. Moving on
"Here's the truth, life sucks sometimes.
When it hurts so bad that you can't go on,
Life keeps moving on."
From "Life Keeps Moving On"
After the late night Waffle House runs, the sound of an alarm clock for your Monday morning 8 a.m. is enough to make these lyrics play in your head all day long.
6. Embracing the struggle
"I've been scared to death of failing
Scared that I'd look like a fool
And I'd rather quit than risk that I could lose."
From "Fear"
If we're honest, we've all said we were dropping out at some point. Between the late night study sessions, the past-due assignments, failed tests, and finals week, it would be an understatement to say that college can be extremely overwhelming at times. But in the end, we keep pushing forward and embrace the struggle that is college.
7. Missing home
"I wanna go home, please take me home,
Back to the place where I belong.
There ain't nothing wrong with all the places that I've been,
But Lord won't you take me home again."
From "Home"
As fun as college can be, there are many times when we feel homesick and we want, more than anything, to go home to our parents or just to our dog.
8. Making the most of every moment
"Let the good times roll, everybody throw your cares away
Leave your worry for another day
Leave yesterday behind
And let the good times roll tonight"
From "Let the Good Times Roll"
After the many breakdowns, it's always good to get together with your closest friends and let the good times roll. Don't forget that college is only a small moment in our lives and make the most of it while you can!
9. Dealing with heartbreak
"I don't have answers, and neither do you
I know the pain of a heartbreak
This isn't easy, this isn't clear
And you don't need Jesus, 'til you're here
Then confusion and the doubts you had up and walk away, they walk away
When a heart breaks"
From "When a Heart Breaks"
Unfortunately, college is bound to come with some heartbreak. Luckily, Ben has been there and he has the perfect lyrics to get us all through the tough times. We may not know why things happen the way they do sometimes, but just jam out to this Ben Rector song and drive with the windows down, and it'll all be okay!
10. Falling in love
"Love, you learn to love, to feel the words you hate to hear
Just shut your mouth and then the truth comes stinging clear
You find you're wrong and it's your problems all along, and then you love someone
But not 'til then, you love someone"
From "And Then You Love Someone"
Just as quickly as you felt heartbreak, you can fall in love with someone again. Growing older, we learn about ourselves and the mistakes we make remind us of who we are. Sometimes all we need is to grow up a little bit before we find the one we're meant to love.
11. Battling finals week
"And your hair's a mess, smashed onto one side of your head
Weary as your eyes that say you're late today.
Yes, the clothes you threw on your way through the dark
The keys you find are not the ones that you've been looking for
And everyone knows the feeling."
From "The Feeling"
Two words: finals week.
12. Following Christ
"Leave all your trouble
Leave all your sorrow
Set down your burden
Come on and follow
Come on heavy laden
Don't wait for tomorrow
Come on, my brother
Come on and follow"
From "Follow You"
Between studying, sleep, and a social life, often times Jesus gets replaced. Ben reminds us not to wait for tomorrow to follow Christ. Leave every trouble that college can present at the feet of Jesus and follow Him. How often we need this reminder.
13. Looking forward to summer
"If we stay up late, we'll sleep in
Cause every day is like the weekend
Thank God for the months after May
Thank God for the summertime
No cares and I'm doing fine, no cares and I'm doing fine
Thank God for the summertime"
From "Thank God for the Summertime"
Summer is a refreshing time for college students. We all look forward to the days of no 8 a.m. classes and no late-night study sessions. It doesn't get much better than three whole months full of lazy days, summer adventures, and no homework!
14. Leaving your best friends
"Doesn't matter where I go
When I'm without you, I am low
Without you, without you, I'd be low and lost without you."
From "Without You"
Although summer is always anticipated, leaving your best friends for three whole months is hard. You've gotten used to seeing your person every single day, and now they are miles away instead of just down the hall. This may or may not be the hardest part of college.
15. Preparing to move on
"I'm ready for a change
And so what does it take to start over again
Step out of comfort my friend
Yes, and change for the better"
From "Ready for Change"
To the college senior, it is time to move on to the adult world. College has become home and the thought of leaving is terrifying, but change is good. The past four (or five) years have brought some of the greatest memories; just imagine the many more to come! The possibilities are endless!
