We've all been there. Approaching the end of high school and having to decide what to do with our lives. It's very daunting and something that needs to be focused more on. We live in a very pre-college era and while that is great for some people, for others it is not.
Thinking back to my high school years, I wouldn't say we were pushed into the "you have to attend college" mind frame but at the same time it sort of felt like we were. This puts a lot of pressure on students and it feels very rushed.
College can be very different for a lot of people and attending just because you believe you have to is certainly not the right choice. Yes, there are a lot of careers out there that require college degrees but there are also ones that do not. College isn't everything. Students can also choose to attend trade schools or go right into the working field.
There are many reasons high schoolers might not want to attend college. This ranges from financial costs to having no clue what to do with their futures, among other reasons. High schools pushing students to think they have no choice but to attend college is not right. What if a student can't afford college and can't get financial aid? Is the high school going to pay it for them? No. Instead, the student will just be told to get a job and save up for it. That attitude has got to stop. If schools are going to act like there is no choice but for students to attend college, then they better provide the means so students can.
I have struggled through some of my classes and that makes me think that there are plenty of others that do or would do the same. If a student constantly fails then that shows that they are either not ready for college at that time or they just aren't college material. And that is okay. A lot of people attend college just because of the pressure put on them so people don't think they are failures.
That is the kind of society we live in today.
Just remember that college is a great opportunity but is one that not everybody needs to take. Everyone is their own unique person and sometimes college might not fit into how their future will be.
