"I have three tests this week, and I'm low key hoping I get hit by a car on my way to class."
Who else has said, heard or thought this exact same thing? You're not alone, it is common among college students. We often complain day in and day out about all of the homework we have, our lack of sleep and often our dwindling social life. School pushes us to the point where we just say forget it and hit the bars with our buds even though we know we're going to fail an assignment. We're too stressed and we just need a break from school. We're tired of the quizzes, labs and homework assignments we have to do. But have we ever stopped to think that we don't have to do all of this, rather we are lucky enough to get to do all of this? Going to college is a privilege, not a chore.
It shouldn't be a burden that we have to study so much or forfeit a night out on the town to get our papers written before the Sunday deadline. We are extremely lucky to be able to go to a University and earn a degree in whatever we chose. We don't think about other people when we're complaining about this awful task of college. We don't think about the people who aren't able to go to college because they can't afford it. We don't think about the people in other countries who don't even get to choose what they study. And we certainly don't think about the people who don't even consider a college education a possibility because they have no way of attaining it.
We have begun to take our education for granted and it needs to stop. We should be honored that we have the privilege to get a degree and should stop acting like it's a difficult task with no benefits. There's no arguing that it isn't difficult after all. However, all of the challenges are worth it. Next time you want to complain about your upcoming tests think about the people who would kill to have the opportunity to take your tests. College is a privilege, not a chore.
