College Isn't For Everyone, There Is No Reason To Give People Without Degrees A Hard Time

Sometimes, a degree isn't worth it. Regardless, the world needs you.

A degree is something most of us strive for, the golden ticket to responsible adulthood. We work for it. We sweat for it. We bleed, cry, and live sleep deprived lives for it. Unfortunately many find out that after being given that coveted piece of paper, that it is just that: a piece of paper.

It seems that today a degree doesn’t guarantee anything unless you graduate with a wonderful GPA, recommendations, and extracurriculars. Even then, nothing is promised. So why strive for this degree if it’s not working towards a life that would make you happy? My advice: don’t.

I’m in my third year of college, and if there is one thing that I have learned, it’s that school isn’t for everybody. Miserable zombies fight for engineering degrees, spending hundreds on tutors every semester. Why? Not because they love it, but because engineers ‘make good money’.

Many of these people would be much happier in other jobs that start at entry level, no experience. They go to school because they have been lied to. The lie we all hear in High School, “You can’t get a job without a degree”.

Often times people shame those that work in these ‘uneducated’ positions.

I’ll tell you one thing. We need these people, and even with no ‘higher education’ they are a lot smarter than many university graduates that I know. Many are the most dedicated, talented, and hardworking whether they have a GED (or less) or a degree.

You want to live in a world without filth? You need a garbage man and a janitor. You want new, better buildings, houses, wind turbines? You need a construction worker. You want food? You need a farmer. You want a burger? Well, someone’s got to make it. Groceries? Cashiers and workers. Quick and easy appointments? Secretary. Anything even partially manufactured? Factory workers.

You know what? Every single one of these people deserve just as much respect the most educated man on Earth. The world needs each and every one of them.

Don’t think you’ll like college? Don’t have a degree in mind? Have something else that you are passionate about? Found a job that would pay more than one that requires a degree?

Most importantly: Will it make you happy?

If you answered yes to any of these, then go for it! College isn’t for everyone. That is totally okay.

I don’t care if you have a doctorate, a GED, or a middle school education. If you can respect those around you, and are striving to be happy, the world needs you.

Be happy. Take the job. Don’t listen to the naysayers. I’m going to school because the job I want requires an education. If school isn't for you, don't be pressured into the commitment. Figure out what you want, and if it will make you happy, go for it.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
