How College Changes As You Get Older

College from the ages of 19-22, as told by me.

First off, these are the three or four years in your life where you kinda find yourself. And I can say, from personal experience, that finding yourself is the hardest thing in the world. But once you find out who you are and your honest with yourself, man does the world become an easy place.

At 19, You are finishing your first year of college, you're moving out of a dorm and into an apartment, and you've probably lost contact with over half the people you thought were your friends. You're just now getting all the freedom you could of ever dreamed of. But how in the heck are you supposed to juggle classes, naps, a job, paying bills, having time for friends, Netflix, and shopping every weekend like you used to?! Balance is the key word here. Learning to balance life is a difficult task that takes time and experience.

At 20 most people are trying to figure out exactly what they wanna do in life. We all think to ourselves, "Did I really pick the right major"? You're struggling with the constant what if's in your life and all the questions your parents ask. At this point, your attitude has become that of a typical college kid and you're just wondering why your professor won't round your 39% F to a 90% A.

YOU'RE FINALLY 21. You can legally drink and do everything you've been doing since 15. Does anyone really remember anything about their 21st year of life???

Okay ouch. 22. You're just trying to finish college with any kind of degree, except general studies (which is funny because I'm a general studies major).

This is where the awkward phase of life really hits you. Of the friends you have left, half of them are married, engaged, or in a serious relationship. The other half of your friends are out, literally ALL THE TIME, and your in between these two phases. Half the time you act, speak and dress like an adult, and the other half of the time you're eating cereal and planning on dropping out only to realize you have expensive taste and McDonald's won't pay you enough. You're so close you can taste graduation..but you can't get into that one class you need to graduate.

Well....here's to 23. May the odds be in your favor.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
