One of my favorite television shows of all time portrays college as one giant party full of beer pong, football games, and lenient professors. The show is called "Blue Mountain State" and it's not the first piece of media to portray college as one big party. Another notable example is National Lampoon's Animal House where it was a joke that a fraternity member had a 0.0 GPA. A 0.0 GPA is absolutely insane. That shows absolutely no effort being put in to better yourself at an institution and make yourself a marketable person.
Now let me clarify that it is okay to party in college. I would be a hypocrite if I said I hadn't attended a party when I probably should've been studying or doing homework. There have been times when I would go out to a bar on a Thursday night when I had an 8 a.m. class the next day and that's okay! Go out and have a good time! Just don't do it all the time. If you do it all the time, your grades will start to slip, you'll be tired all the time, you'll be less motivated, and party time will become less and less special to the point where it might seem like a chore to go out and enjoy yourself.
The point of attending a higher institution is to better yourself by getting a higher education after graduating from a secondary school. Going to college often times means more freedom which means that mom and dad aren't there to give you curfews, chores, or meals. You're on your own. And when you're on your own, the temptation rises to ditch your studies to go to that house party your friends were talking about in your history class. Because who in their right mind would want to study over going to have fun? Well, no one I know wants to study or do homework but some students need to realize that the party is going to end but the responsibilities don't end.
Choose your responsibilities first over the party. There will be other parties. Believe me on that one. Cs may get degrees. Sure. But an employer notices GPA. They notice if you were a slacker in college and if you chose the party over the grades and that will effect your chances of landing a job after graduation. Blue Mountain State and Animal House are really fun to watch and they're fun to imagine yourself in the shoes of Alex Moran from BMS or Flounder from Animal House but that's not real life. In those shows, the party is non-stop with short breaks in between to play football and get chewed out by the Dean of Students. So don't stay cooped up in your dorm. That's not what I want you all to take away from this article. Go out and enjoy yourself! College is some of the best four years of your life but don't forget why you're there.
