Colin Kapernick has found himself at the center of a heated debate around something all Americans are expected to do: standing during the national anthem. In his recent preseason games with the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick has refused to stand during the anthem, receiving tons of flak for his decision to not stand.
Kaepernick said that his reasoning for not standing during the national anthem is because he does not feel he should stand and "show pride in a flag that oppresses black people and people of color." The team has shown its support for Kaepernick. The team released a statement saying that they support Kaepernick's right to free speech. Teammate Eric Reid also showed his support by kneeling with Kaepernick during the national anthem at another 49ers preseason game. Even with these shows of support, so many others have criticized Kaepernick
People all over the internet have been criticizing Kaepernick for his refusal to stand during the anthem. One of the loudest voices against Kaepernick has been Tomi Lahren, host The Blaze. Lahren is known for her conservative views on many issues that start to trend on the internet, and Kaepernick became her next target. In one of her few rants agains Kaepernick, Larhen basically told Kaepernick that if he didn't like how things are in the U.S., he should just leave. Other people on the internet have been echoing this sentiment.
Kaepernick's refusal to stand during the national anthem has sent shockwaves throughout the country and the team itself. Many people are debating and fighting about this issue. The Santa Clara Police Union has also threatened to stop sending officers to 49ers games after the showing support for Kaepernick. Kaepernick has also lost his spot as starting quarterback for the 49ers, for his performance during the preseason. It will be interesting to see what Kaepernick will do next when the NFL regular season starts up.
